Waarom niet? We hebben al die nodige ingrediënten
– Onbeheersbaar haven
– zwak DEA
– mafia operatie
– ect…
The video doesn’t actually answer why traffickers choose the port of Antwerp specifically over other ports like Rotterdam. This is because Antwerp’s port has significantly less restrictive patrol policies for import then Rotterdam (or rather Rotterdam made theirs far more restrictive a decade ago and Antwerp never followed suit).
This choice provides a massive competitive advantage to Antwerps port thanks to greater speed and efficiency, providing a lot of money and wealth to the region. Of course this also means that all drug trafficers are going to start switching over to Antwerp and several gangs fighting over control in this hub.
A lot of discussions in this subreddit regarding this subject are about the war on drugs and cannabis legalisation. While i agree that those are valid points, it is worth noting that even if you oust out De Wever and legalize cannabis, very little of the underlying dynamic causing this situation will change.
The only true realistic solution here is to adopt Rotterdams port policies, though that’s unlikely to happen soon, regardless which party is in power, since the economic price paid for this would be too high. Nonetheless the clock is ticking, with every year these gangs are growing more powerfull and establish a stronger foothold in Antwerp. If we wait for another decade, chances are that these maffia gangs will start infiltrating every aspect of society, making it almost impossible to get rid of them, even if more strict policies on the port are eventually implemented.
A bit sloppy journalism: where they mark the location of Antwerp, Equador, Rotterdam,… and the torture booth was in the Netherlands (you can even recognize the fake Dutch Police uniforms with the bright yellow). I want to believe the figures mentioned, but if they’re obtained with the same accuracy…
