Our political system is in decline and everything traces back to that
The British public have swallowed the three word political slogan
Hook… line… sinker…
Feels like every country is in decline. America is barely hanging on, Italy has elected a far right nutter – even Switzerland has. Not sure what is happening.
>”The former Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull cut straight to the point. “At the moment the place looks like a shambles. It is very sad,” he said at a conference in Sydney on Friday.
>“I think what she did was so mad,” Turnbull added in reference to Truss’s mini-budget that crashed the markets and triggered a domestic financial crisis. “I was just staggered. I knew Boris was wild and woolly but Liz Truss appeared to be a more sensible person, but turned out to be even crazier.”
We really are the laughing stock of the world but a lot of people seem to think that if we salute the flag enough or sing the national anthem louder then we will return to past glories.
Reality is beginning to interfere, we are just an island in the west Atlantic with diminishing influence in the world (Look at Australia above), the sooner we realise that then we might be able to deal with our problems instead of demanding everyone engages in communal acts of teary eyed historical worship of a country which no longer exists.
if we lived in a patriarchal society the political class would have been dragged out and given an absolute kicking at the minimum.
While the west being in decline is overblown, the UK definitely doesn’t have its best days infront of it, no matter what morons like Johnson and Farage tell you.
We’ve left the worlds biggest trading bloc and others are outpacing us . Thank you brexit
Declinism is a self-fulfilling prophecy and implies that there’s nothing that a country can do about it.
That’s wrong because there’s a lot we can do, like constitutional reform, investment in infrastructure/high-skilled technical education that feeds into a manufacturing-based industrial strategy, green energy roll out, foreign policy reform by revitalising international development, cleaning up standards in public life. And that’s just scratching the surface.
The current political crisis has facilitated a reversible period of national decline if the nation responds by electing people with fresher ideas than that knackered freak-show we call the Tory party.
Whats scary is, look at the effect of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and all the knock-on effects on fuel prices, food prices. That’s just one country invading another country. What’s going to happen in 20 years when we have mass migrations due to climate change, water shortages become widespread, etc
Only because politics is now simply some dude reading a twitter feed and feeling that’s will
Of nation
I disagree. Brexit, the first ever instance where a country has decided to leave their local trade block (i.e. NAFTA, SEATO, CARCOM, EU, etc.), largely signaled to the world markets to stay away from the British economy. This is especially true post-brexit when it became clear that UK leadership had no plan to establish viable (global) trade agreements. UK Reliance on European markets, and Europe’s closed door response, signaled the UK’s fundamental misunderstanding of how globalization works and the need to share and unify local industries and resources.
Now even the Asian markets won’t touch the UK as they see no viable path to economic cooperation or mutual gain. In the most generic sense the UK has simply lost all their poker chips and will have to leave the table. This of course was all accelerated by a global recession, trade/resource constraints, war, etc.
The entire west has declined culturally. The “culture” war is now fought over what? Female and black characters in video games? Trans characters in fiction? We’re in a cultural dark age. Economically we’ve been fucking around the past 12 years and are about to have a decade of finding out. And geo-politically China just went full Stalin and will likely make an attempt to subdue Taiwan within Xi’s lifetime.
It’s either WW3 or have China dicate our entire economy.
says the Socialist Worker…. which is the ultimate oxymoron….
I dunno. I think David Kelly debacle was worse than this. Especially as it ended in somebody’s life ended a little sooner than expected.
It’s a “nation in decline” because of the bastard tories running it into the ground!
