Nottingham City Council leader mystified by £16m error

  1. Just typical local government behaviour. Ignorance and incompetence is routinely defended and productivity is irrelevant as long as you smile, say “please” and never challenge anyone.

The amount of money that is wasted in their endless pursuit of a miracle system that just magically works without any input is staggering. There are no cost-benefits analysis made for anything, no records kept for statistical purposes and working systems are routinely replaced just because something new and shiny comes to market. Meanwhile systems that cost hundreds of thousands a year to run are under-utilised because no one bothers.

There is no real management, the services run themselves, the directors don’t do anything as this would mean they have to take the responsibility and become unpopular. Service managers don’t work for the council or care what’s good for the council, they work for the service and do what ever the hell they want with a just vague nod to council’s policies and aims.

It doesn’t matter if one service makes savings as there is always another service throwing money out of the window. Many business systems small councils have are geared for large scale enterprises. With the scale comes the savings, but try to show the facts to prove it, they are being ignored even if there is better fit, cheaper option available. They just want to buy what ever everyone else has.

Source: moved from private sector to public naively thinking that I can help by showing how you can do more for less. For example, watching massive savings achieved being thrown out of window with a software solution requiring minimum of 100,000 households before breaking even. Now costing the council over £300,000 extra over the contract lifecycle.
