  1. There is something similar at Dynamo in Zuerich, but for beer

Edit: there was, I guess. Last time I’ve been there it was 2019, so go figure.

  2. Is it common to find random texts in Swiss German in Switzerland? I know that’s the language everybody speaks in the German speaking part but I also know Standard Swiss German is the language that is used in official matters.

  3. It’s rare but I’ve actually seen this before. Also, years ago in Zürich (near Stauffacher) we used to go to a restaurant for lunch where you’d get a free syrup or iced tea if you asked nicely (it was on the menu as free, like here). All the regulars would come here and get a free drink for lunch.

  4. This is essentially humoristic but the issue here is that the parents pay, not the kids. So, they have no real incentive in asking politely 🙂 Also, CHF 2 is worth nothing in Switzerland.

  5. I’m 51 years old, and this was really common when I was a kid. Even if not on the menu, it was a common thing with the servers. I remember doing this with a big smile when we went out to a restaurant. I do not know if it was free, but it was always important that we asked in the proper way. I remember practicing with my grandfather before the servers came to the table.

  6. Transcript:

A Restaurant menu is shown. Part of the beverage section is highlighted. It reads:

    Für unsere kleinen Gäste:

Sirup: I wet en Sirup Fr. 2.00
Sirup: I het geen en Sirup Fr. 1.00
Sirup: Grüezi, i het geen en Sirup, danke offertiert,

    Translation:

    For our little guests:

    Syrup: I want a syrup Fr. 2.00
Syrup: I would like to have a syrup Fr. 1.00
Syrup: Good day, I would like to have a syrup, thank you on the house.

  7. Why not. I still see many places where the sirup is still offered for the kids and it’s always nice. The bar/restaurant does not loose money as we usually give more tip to thank them.

In the opposite, when we are in a place where they charge 2CHF for a 1dl sirup we give less tip.

At some point, it feels like a bad move from the bartender to make pay for this. This must not change their balance at the end of the month, and get bad feedback from the families.

  8. To me, asking for something and saying “thank you” without hearing the answer first, is quite rude… I would replace “danke” with “bitte”…

  9. The restaurant I used to work at always had free sirup for the kids. We had it anyway for some of the cocktails and tap water costs nothing.

  10. wtf, who the hell says “geen”
That’s not how we treat “R” in switzerland!
can someone please report this restaurant to the gesundheitsamt?
