Holy shit, big leap, in italy we have order of 90 f-35
Wow, those are some numbers. Thats more then we, the Dutch are signed on for ( even including our option for a small extra batch) and we are a tier 2 participant in the JSF program. ( only UK is tier I, Italy together with NL are Tier 2, rest are Tier 3). Finland is going to pay top money here.
The JSF are going to be manufactured in Italy and maintained in the Netherlands with many European partners involved so we all win in this.
I thought the F35 was more or less a failure? Too expensive not even the US wants to use them?
Maybe stuff changed.
Damn, 64 F-35s on top of 55 F-18 Hornets which are great BVR fighters themselves.
That plus Finnish ground based radars and air defense would reduce Russian Sukhois to target practice, it is really really good.
Objectively a better plane.

* 64 F-35A Block 4 aircraft, with drag chutes and sidekicks (carry 6 AIM-120 AMRAAMS internally)
* 4.7BEUR for the aircraft, 2.9BEUR for service, training, infrastructure etc, 1.55BEUR for weapons, ~800MEUR for “other domestic costs / buffer”
* Weapons package includes; JDAMs in 1000kg and 250kg versions, SDB I/II, JSM, JASSM-ER, AIM-9X, AIM-120D, potentially AIM-260 in the future
* 755MEUR weapons bought now, 800MEUR later to ensure ramped obsolescence and deliveries of newer weapons (AIM-260)
* No major differences in annual operating costs between the bids, notes that in particular Swiss and Dutch numbers aren’t comparable with Finnish due to major differences in calculation principles, fits within the allotted 250MEUR annual budget for operating costs.
* All current bases (including road bases) can take the F-35A in all conditions, two main operating bases as currently in use will continue
* Assembly of over 400 front fuselages for the global F-35 fleet in Finland
* Independent storaging of necessary spare parts etc. in country, to be able to independently maintain the fleet in a time of war
* Finland will have the most extensive domestic servicing capability of the F-35 (not including the U.S.)
* Importance of mission sets in evaluation: Air superiority 30%, Air to ground/support of ground forces 20%, Support of naval forces 10%, Long-range fires/interdiction 20%, ISR 20%
* In evaluation the F-35 scored a 4.47 and the runner up scored 3.81 (4.0 was the requirement)
* First F-35’s operational in Finland 2026 onwards.
DRM ALIS, expensive support, cant compete with IMC, Finlands wants to get cozy with Washington, the US is desperate to find replacement buyers after Turkey.
Yeah not SISU
> Rival jet maker Boeing said it was disappointed with Finland’s decision, adding that the company still sees significant international interest in its F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler.
The Growler serves a different role and seems kind of irrelevant here.
The Super Hornet…international interest from whom?
*looks*
Ah. So…Australia, which was already using Super Hornets, got some newer ones specifically as an interim aircraft to fill the gap until the F-35.
And Kuwait.
Yeah. Finland wasn’t going to get Super Hornets.
Holy mother od gosh! 64 😳
Our Rafales look ridiculous.

One of the few countries in which military pilots are lucky to be able to operate such technology. I wonder how it feels to fly this thing.
No one here is taking in consideration that the price of the f-35 dropped over the last years, hence why they have the oppertunity to buy more than countries who joined the progam a couple of years ago.
I am always shocked at the prices of jets.
How much Eurofighter lags behind these last gen USA/Russia/China planes?

Strong US marketing at play: [high-level US government pressure being exerted on Helsinki to select the F-35 over other options. ](https://breakingdefense.sites.breakingmedia.com/2021/11/f-35-faces-stiff-competition-as-european-nations-decide-on-future-fighters/)
Oh well, I guess every weapon manufacturing country is playing this game, I suppose the USA just have better cards…
This immediately made me think of [that meme ](https://mobile.twitter.com/Ukraine/status/1468206078940823554?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1468206078940823554%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-40712824491147674606.ampproject.net%2F2111242025001%2Fframe.html) that the official Ukrainian government recently posted on their Twitter.
