Lithuania says China has told multinationals to boycott Vilnius over Taiwan row

  1. Sorry for the register-wall, but what multinationals? Google – that doesn’t operate in China – or Facebook? Or is it their multinational companies like Baidu? I don’t think losing access to Baidu and Youku will harm Lithuania as much.

  2. If the EU can’t stand united against this type of bullying then all this simply does is speed the process by which it dismantles

  3. Lithuania provoked this crisis on purpose after being prodded by the US. Europe, being unable to chart its own independent foreign policy, is hapless in reacting.

Only ~1% of Lithuania’s total exports goes to China. So what’s the big deal? Well, this ban also includes EU-based companies who source some of their parts from Lithuania and then export from their home countries. So they now have an incentive to drop Lithuania and find another sourcing destination. It’s a force multiplier.

People say “stand up to China”. I say, easy to be tough on the internet. Lithuania’s foreign minister has proposed “reshoring supply chains away from China”. Remember this rhetoric last year when Covid hit? What actually happened? US/EU trade with China is breaking daily records. So much for decoupling, LOL.

This is perhaps an indication of the idiocy and delusion present in Lithuanian govt. How are you going to replace 1.4 billion people in Europe? It’s not just numbers either, it’s skill. China has a brutually competitive labour force which has unmatched capability in electronics and many other industries.

Just google Tim Cook’s interview when the reporter asked him why Apple won’t move its production to USA from China. Cook explained that not only would it cost much more, even if he did, it’s not even clear it could be possible. America simply doesn’t have a large, trained workforce in manufacturing anymore. Same is true for most of Europe. Even if you include, Turkey, MENA and god knows what other country, this same issue resurfaces. China doesn’t just export cheap copies anymore.

People don’t understand it isn’t the 1990s anymore. They do highly advanced stuff at a scale almost nobody else does. And this is what the Lithuanian foreign minister thinks can be replaced by the stroke of a pen? LMAO.

  4. Scary to face a global power that can read maps! With the US we could have lived in the knowledge that they wouldn’t even know that Lithuania is a country and have boycotted Russia instead… just because that is what you do when in doubt.

  5. I think it’s important for us as consumers to know which multinationals are aligning themselves with China so we can make an informed decision as to whether or not we want to buy their products.

  6. The stereotypw is that Balkan people are dumb and primitive, but the Baltics are truly something else. Why are brain cells in such short supply there?

  7. 🙌🙌🙌We will not back down🙌🙌🙌

I’m from Lithuania. Lithuanian support for Taiwan also comes from knowing what it’s like to have dictatorial neighbor. That’s why Lithuania always supports Countries like Ukraine, Georgia, Belarusians fleeing Belarus, Taiwan.

In our century we clearly see a divide in political structures, one is authoritarian and another one is democratic. I’m not saying that every democracy is perfect far from it, but it should still be thrived for. Lithuania chooses openly go again authoritarian regime. Lithuania is not perfect, but we still can thrive to be better.

I just really hope that EU will stand with us on this matter, if China will be able to bully us out using international companies, they will be able to bully other countries on different occasions, even if it doesn’t involve Taiwan.

P.S. Tiananment square happened/ Uyghur genocide happened/ Tibetan genocide happened
