It’s really the only way to make Dublin bus reliable in this city. As soon as kids go back to school every yummy mummy is out on the roads in the SUV to drive their little darlings straight to the front door rain or shine. Commute times double because of it, fuck them all into one lane and have a bus lane for every route in the city, or at least for the entirety of the new spines.
Anyone who wants the privilege of driving right into the city centre in one of the most congested cities in the EU can pay for it with their time, and throw on a load of congestion charges for good measure, everyone else wants to live in the 21st century and have reliable public transport that doesn’t take 1h+ to travel 10km will be on the bus/luas, enjoying reliable public transport.
has to happen.
It’s a poll made by irishcycle, of course the numbers will be favouring cyclists
I want more bus lanes, and I want more cycle lanes to kick the cyclists out of the bus lanes. And taking a car into the city to be not required but possible and very inconvenient, with maybe more park and ride facilities. I also want a mars bar.
It’s insane how pro cycling this sub is compared to wider society
Often wondered why
Our public transport network is like something from the 3rd world! We need to upgrade the network before we can start to think about grand plans laid out by “Irish Cycle”
This is a good start, but really we need to improve public transport, and by that I mean proper off-street public transport, not buses.
I’m all for cycle lanes but throwing them into high traffic areas on top of already narrow lanes is not the way to do it. I just bought a house this year to find out that they’re putting a cycle lane in on my road for the primary school that’s here. The children that go to this school don’t cycle for the most part and the one or two that do, cycle on the footpath with their parents. They’re young children and don’t travel to school alone. So, the only thing this cycle lane will provide is a headache to the residents that have to deal with it all year round, including summer holidays and midterms when the school will be closed.
These cycle lanes are not being properly planned out and it’s causing issues for other road users. The government think that by narrowing road lanes it’ll push car users off the road. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The only thing that these poorly planned cycle lanes will create is frustration with road users, increased traffic and unsafe conditions, as drivers will now have to navigate narrowed road lanes and hideous bollards.
Sorry but this doesnt add up , 62% of rural dwelling FG supporters and 68% of urban dwelling shinners agreeing on the same thing would be a bit mad anyway, but especially on this i m not having it, sample size is 1008 people online, that poll has been tampered with
Edit : no evidence the poll is even real, not listed ok SBP or redc site
There’s no more cycle advocate than me but irish cycle is dodgeball. From dodgy maps to dodgy surveys and a dodgy comment moderation policy to a dodgy take on how to cycle. I know it means well but it’s clearly written by someone who never cycled a day in their lives.
Yesterday I read of ghost buses and have much experience of slow crowded trains. Look the car is a disaster but Dublin and Ireland doesnt have the public transport network to get a “tipping point” of people out of private cars. Im 15 years from retirement and I wouldnt bet my pension it will be there by 2037.
I only have to go into the office one day a week but could completely understand why someone would drive in if they were regularly relying on Dublin bus. Shambles.
The bigger issue is mostly it’s not a problem but inside of the city centre but they won’t change anything about there at all. Like try and get through Rathmines in the morning as a cyclist or a bus or a car for that matter. They need more lanes in general but they would have to knock some buildings maybe take out some front gardens or a pitch that’s attached to the school there to fix it. Same goes for areas like up in the north inner city where there are a bunch of dead dark alleyways they want to keep ahold of instead of maybe rejuvenating the area by opening them up and maybe making a road to replace the one they turned into a pedestrian street down at Capel street. It’s a mess and they just will never fix it.
66 of voters also can’t find their arse with both hands and support anything until they realize it directly affects them.
Dire need anyone seen the cycle lane on the east link Bridge…haha
This wee island of ours should be a gift to travel around the 20th century mindset of cars cars cars needs to change bike bus boat should be our goal in the coming years imo.
More and more people are being priced out of Dublin and moving further out. Cars are simply necessary. And look at all the workers in the city! Huge construction projects in the docklands and all around with workers coming as far as northern ireland to do the work.
How do you expect a tradesman to get on site with his tools and gear for the job for 7am start using public transport?
People who vote for this stuff are office workers with a luas or bus directly to their place of work at their front door.
“Suits me so fuck everyone else” attitude.
Interesting findings, I did my own poll and found, 96% of people won’t park their SUV more than 10 foot away from their local Tesco entrance.
