Brazil here I come with my appliances

  1. It frustrates me to no end that there isn’t at least a continental plug standard. I really wish there was a universal 220v standard, but I’d take just continental, at this point. The fact that an appliance bought 5 km west of me has a different plug is completely mind-boggling and infuriating.

  2. Nope, Brazil uses Type N, not Type J plugs. Although pin distance horizontally is identical, the offset between PE and L/N is in Brazil 3mm, in Switzerland 5mm.

Seems that the creator of that informative picture needs some basic knowledge on electrical outlet norms.

Edit: Amusing update – The topic is on discussion over at the [free Brazilian](https://www.reddit.com/r/brasillivre/comments/yqinmy/esse_tal_padr%C3%A3o_brasileiro_de_tomada_%C3%A9_uma_droga/) subreddit as well….

  3. I lost count how many times I took a laptop to a European trip and ended up searching for an electronics shop to find a cable 😉

  4. Been to Brazil, many places I’ve been to will have a crazy kind of sockets that combines like the UK, the US and the Swiss one (well a very similar one and yes they fit)

  5. Swiss one is best. Secure (at least if it follows the norm). Compact. Only pluggable in one direction (is more secure for things like lamps)

  6. The italian one shown here I think it’s a bit outdated. I think right now there’s no 3rd hole (that’s what he/she/they said)

  7. Tudo que veio do Brasil comigo: PC, secador de cabelo e chapinha da minha namorada e etc, não precisou de adaptador aqui. Encaixa perfeitamente.

  8. UK: -.-

    India etc.: •.•

    Denmark: 😀

    Russia: 😶

    Switzerland: .•.

    Italy: Pikachu css meme

    US, Canada, Mexico: D:

  9. Swiss and Brasil looks the same but they are different.

Grounding pin – middle one is approx 1mm moved.

With a force it will work but damaging the socket..

  10. Actually most of Brazil is still using 10A type C sockets, i.e. T11.

I know because I’ve just rolled out a product there and it was a nightmare.

  11. actually saw quite a few swiss sockets here in thailand as well, but the most common here are not on this list

  12. That’s not a South African plug, the scale is way off. Ours is the same size as the UK plug just with 3 round pins (Type M)

Also SA has recently moved to the Type N plug and socket.

  13. The UK has the best plugs in the world bar none. YouTube search “UK plug socket” and you’ll find several very interesting videos explaining the engineering in them.
