Channel migrants: Nearly 1,000 people cross in single day

  1. I’m pretty pro-immigration generally but how is this sustainable? 6,000 people a month this month trying to come over, and needing to be housed/processed safely, just seems like an astronomical feat at this point.

  2. Clearly Rwanda is not working, so that’s 200m+ down the drain.

Edit: I don’t support the Rwanda plan, im just pointing out Tory financial stupidity.

  3. And this is news? This has been going on for years. There were IIRC over 45,000 people crossing the channel last year, just counting the ones that were detected and on record. Actual numbers are probably higher than 100,000 a year.

  4. If European elections have taught us anything it’s that the longer this issue is ignore the more likely the far right are to gain political power.

Haven’t they worked it out at something like 3.4 billion pound per year just paying for hotels for migrants to stay at. 3.4 billion pound is an insane amount of money and we’re pissing it away on hotels.

It’s easy to see why people get angry about this issue.

  5. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/business/comment/city-eye-facts-on-a-plate-our-population-is-at-least-77-million-5328454.html%3Famp

Back in 2007 the supermarkets estimated the UK population to be “at least” 77m you have to assume that’s only gone up since.

Please remember the ‘official’ population is counted as those who responded to the last Census. I’ll wager that people who didn’t leave at the end of their holiday/ university/ work experience/ or flat out arrived her by other means didn’t respond and never have.

That’s why the NHS and all other services including housing is overloaded.

  6. One thousand in a day, the waitlist to have claims actually processed is years long and most just work illegally and underpaid in the meantime. There’s simply no way we have the infrastructure to keep dealing with these volumes, and even if a case gets rejected, you aren’t going to find that person again.

Genuine refugees and the like are one thing, but thousands upon thousands of people fleeing the tyranny and chaos of…France? Either these are largely economic migrants, or France is some brutal backwater where a genuine refugee can’t claim asylum or survive, which seems unlikely.

I don’t begrudge someone from a shitty country, with little chance of immigrating legally, for chasing a better life, I would too, but that doesn’t mean a country can simply accept an endless stream.

  7. This is completely unsustainable. Why aren’t the government doing anything about it?

Where are they going to live/ how will infrastructure cope?

  8. It’s a fucking shit show at this point, they are not doing anything about it. Hotel by me just got filled with 94 men (20/40ish by their looks) it’s a road stop hotel in-between a few small villages in the middle of nowhere.

  9. Where are the women? Is every young to middle aged man single or an orphan? Did they just leave their mothers, daughters, and wives behind?

  10. return them to France and they won’t carry on coming over 👍 the only reason they come here is because they know they will be accepted, they’ve probably been through a good number of safe European countries to get here so the idea they are asylum seekers is a joke. soft touch britain

  11. Over the past 20 years we’ve had more and more right wing policies when it comes to immigration in the UK resulting in an Asylum Seeker for Refugee swap with Rwanda. While at the same time the numbers for asylum seekers have increased sharply. Especially when the UK left the EU and lost access to the Europol database of things like Albanian gangs which have been trying and succeeding to operate in the UK.
To show how bad the Home Office is so bad at its job now, it had to quash a report pointing out how successful offical immigration was to the UK by the UK Treasury a few years ago. Weirdly the department that holds the purse strings on the new development and infrastructure that the UK needs to accommodate those immigrants.

  12. Damn. Didn’t realise it was this bad.

Something needs to be done. It’s not sustainable long term.

And I say this as a child of immigrants.

  13. According to some Googling, there were about 600,000+ newly minted brits last year. Where are we going to keep them all? They aren’t going to work for at LEAST 12-16 years, if at all. They’re a drain on the education system, the NHS, infrastructure. And worst of all.. THEY DON’T EVEN SPEAK ENGLISH!!!

  14. It’s very frustrating I’ve been on the housing list for 20 years now the council have told me I don’t have a housing need it’s all fu c k e d u p

  15. I cannot believe there’s still people that believe the majority of these people are fleeing war and persecution. It’s completely fucking unreasonable to put any kind of positive spin on these statistics.

  16. Wife works in one of the hotels that houses them….all men, and most are dirty cunts who try it on with the female staff, most aren’t from places like Syria/Afghanistan/Eritrea either. Fucking send them packing, my wife’s not an EU citizen either and she agrees. Probably because its cost us £7k already and she’s still got 2.5 years and another few thousand to spend til settled status.

I’m not an anti immigration person either, I just think things need to be done legally and on a case by case basis. Most of these immigrants will end up working in the back of a takeaway for £30 a day or delivering food, hardly aspiring talent we need to attract, just another drain on our fragile country.

  17. I’m sorry, but 1000 people a day is extreme. Not because of some resource argument, but the trafficking and criminality likely to build in unstructured communities without infrastructure and proper support from local govt/policing.

I haven’t seen a thing from govt carrying out a skills audit, developing plans to integrate into our country where possible and utilising the net positive that can be taken by migration. We have a housing crisis and many people coming to the country – many may be skilled labourers, or tradespeople, or the many other professions that could be useful.

Typical of this country after Brexit, honestly. Politics has become about catchphrases and PR teams, with not enough hard work to create a system that benefits the country.

  18. Unpopular Reddit opinion and I’m left wing as they come. We should adopt a Japanese like mentality. Look after our own first. Honestly, most of them seem to be young men with views that are extremely different from our own e.g. on matters such as LGBT, women and equality.

Fuck hotels, fuck Rwanda, send them packing or treat them like Japan treats them and they’ll probably want to go back 👍

  19. Yes and these people are put up in hotels at the cost of the Taxpayer.

There are two 5-star hotels near where I live that is now closed to the public due to them housing illegal immigrants. They get free housing in these hotels, free food, free clothing and spending money, which I read is costing £6 million PER DAY. These Government contracts last until 2024 too, meaning that if the cost remains at £6 million per day until the end of 2024, this will have a total cost of £4.3 BILLION. Meanwhile, our NHS is struggling, we have our own citizens living on the streets with no help or assistance from the Government.

    It’s absolutely disgusting.

  20. I commented on a previous post on this sub yesterday about concerns about housing availability for UK citizens, from the response you’d of thought I was Hitler . I literally can’t belive the amount of comments today that say basically what I said yesterday . Has everyone just woke up this morning and seen the truth of the matter?

  21. And look, almost to the person young men.

I’m sorry, but how is allowing this migration good for the UK? It’s not controlled. It’s not balanced. It’s taking into account what the country needs. It’s not taking into account how likely the migrants are to integrate.

I’m sorry, but if you think we should just accept everyone or even most of them, then you are fucking insane.
