The vatican only received its independence from Italy in 1929,
before that it was the papal states between 756 -1870 which covered the middle of Italy with the highest population of 3 million

The value of the “assets” stored in the place is very difficult to quantify but I suppose some would be considered priceless and that’s where this number is pulled from.
Fun fact ..the Vatican has the highest crime rate per capita in the world (mainly pick pockets)
