Use building the railway to Navan to get a direct Derry to Dublin line?

  1. Went into more detail in my post on the politics subreddit but basically, there is a campaign to bring back railways to Tyrone and Donegal.

In my opinion a better idea would be to build the dublin to navan line then extend north using the abandoned line up to kingscourt in Cavan. Google maps says the route between Derry and Kingscourt would go through monaghan, strabane and omagh.

Cavan, monaghan, meath and donegal have 16 tds, 10%, of the dail so it would get more support down here plus would be more economic than a derry to portadown line.

I know this is pie in the sky stuff but we can live in hope.

  2. Navan not having a direct train to Dublin is madness.

I was looking at houses in Navan and couldn’t pull the trigger because of the lack of decent public transport (I read enough reports from people on here about the bus service to put me off).

  3. There will never be a train to Navan until the motorway is paid for.

The 50km m3 motorway from Kells to Dublin has two tolls within 30km or so.

When it was built the contract with the Spanish builders stated that if traffic failed to hit a certain level the county council would pay the difference, and has done.

Meanwhile, the former train line to Kingscourt has been ripped up to build a greenway.

Every election since the late 1990s has promised a trainline. We’re still waiting.
