Ah yes, the famous “Spike” of Dublin

  1. I thought it was built with the light on top to signal to the junkies and dealers that this is the place to meet.

  2. The guy who posted this on that sub is in the comments telling anyone who corrects him that nobody in Ireland calls it the Spire and that Dubs all call it the Spike. Lived there for 7 years and never heard it called “The Spike” once, is that really a thing?

  3. As an American that recently visit Dublin, I have to admit it was refreshing seeing a nonsensical waste of tax payer money that wasn’t in the shape of a cross…

  4. It could be utilised as a dipole antenna. 121m length gives a 1.1MHz resonant frequency. Which makes it a perfect VDSL2 downstream antenna. At least get some use out of that €4M…

  5. After it had just been put up it was colloquially referred to as “the Spike” for a couple of years. No one called it “Spire” back then except the people who designed it, financed it and put it up.

  6. I like to imagine that underground is the rest of the spire, consisting of a plunger and barrel filled with heroin in honour of those who see the it most often.

  7. When I was in Dublin for a while I called it “the needle”. An acquaintance of mine who had been living there for a couple of years was quite unhappy about that.

Did I hurt her local pride?

  8. Who approved this? Seriously? We live in a country that has produced some of the greatest writers, scientists and artists and this is the best we can come up with 🤦

  9. The original OP this post comes from is a butt hurt little baby, gets pissy at everyone who points out that fucking nobody in Dublin calls it the ‘spike’.

    They are a dose.

  10. They made shite of the road when they done it up after the Spire (no one really calls it the spike). Road and footpath are the same color with a very small step, too easy to walk off or drive on to if you aren’t paying attention.
