We’re probably not going to have a reckoning on what the Empire did around the world without also engaging with what the Empire did at home – The Class War. Plenty of people feel no connection to the Empire, and by and large many of them are correct. Their ancestors were not colonial governors, officers, or investors. Their ancestors were sent down the pits and crushed under mine carts or died slow deaths from black lung, they were children whose arms were ripped off in the machinery of cotton mills, matchstick girls with fossy jaw. British people starved to death in the British Empire, the ruling classes didn’t give a shit.
Also, it’s really hard to take these complaints seriously when people keep framing them around the Monarch. They’ve been only figureheads since George IV. None of these Kings and Queens decided that the Empire should happen, so use of language such as “Elizabeth II’s Legacy” just make the author look ignorant. They are supposed to be an academic, I’d expect them to list the Cabinet members of the British government during colonialism, instead of the Kings and Queens.
yep Americans going at it again. it isn’t the political party in charge for most of the 20th & 21st centuries? u know the ones that have pushed taxation laws keeping the spread. what the hell did QE2 pass to keep us from leveling up? see just clouding the issue and blaming the wrong people. politicians are the ones doing it they have the power.
Further, the politicians in the states are the ones doing it there too or is it Beyonce? see the difference.
Someone may want to remind scientificamerican that their entire country has been stolen. They can give it back, then we can talk about jewels, crowns and stuff.
EDIT: I see it’s this nutjob.
>In 2018, Andrews tweeted that the sight of the flag of England stirred the same feelings in him as the sight of a Confederate Flag does for African Americans*
>This is an opinion and analysis article, and the views expressed by the author or authors are not necessarily those of Scientific American.
Ahh I’m glad they added that to distance themselves from the author.
>Kehinde Andrews is a professor of Black studies at Birmingham City University in England and author of The New Age of Empire: How Racism and Colonialism Still Rule the World
So this guy, Kehinde Andrews is just flogging his latest book. If you want to amuse yourself, dig around in his twitter.
When middle class white Brits have to face the fact that the reason they are rich and ‘civilized’ is because of the horrors done to other people throughout history. *shocked pikachu face*
