The population of Leitrim was 155k 1841, today it is 35k. While I expected it be higher this was considerably higher than I expected.

  1. Once, some fucker said “to hell or to Connaught”. During the famine Connaught became hell.

  2. I stumbled across Irish census figures for 1841 and 1851 and the depopulation, especially in the West of the country, post-famine, is like a punch to the stomach. When I show people around Co. Mayo I remind them that before The Famine the wild beauty spots we’re travelling through would have been busy, crowded places with *so* many people living and working all around.

  3. American lurking here. I know enough to know what the drop in the 1841-1851 census was caused by, but no clue at all what caused the 20k drop between 1811 and 1813?

  4. this is just before the famine and just before the Earl of Leitrim was William Clements. He was a dreadful bastard of a fella. He was so bad that he was called out in the house of commons for the extreme cruelty of tenants.

  5. Leitrim doesn’t exist…

It’s only used to round off national population numbers up to the nearest 500k.

  6. What caused a 80% + increase in a 5 year period in 1770s ? Seems suspect or perhaps alot if these older numbers were simple estimates

  7. Another interesting one from 1841 Census. Dublin was county with 5th largest population: 1) Cork 854k 2) Galway 440k 3) Tipperary 436k 4) Mayo 389k and 5) Dublin 373k
