Fears as UK has just 9 days’ supply left – compared to France’s 103 days

  1. 21st century Britain and we’re all trying to prepare to survive a brutal winter. Likely followed by another anomalously hot summer that’ll no doubt kill or at least hospitalise a few people.

The idea that we were ever at “the end of history” seems so laughably arrogant now. So much progress gone so quickly.

  2. Fears for who? The gas companies because they can’t charge us extortionate fees when they run out or us because we will have to wear a jumper?

  3. And the UK Tory government not telling people to cut down on consumption.

This should work out just fine I suppose.

  4. Unlike France we have our own gas fields, a direct pipeline from Norway and excess re-gasification capacity for imported LNG. That and we don’t have half our power stations out of action.

  5. What I don’t understand about the picture is that if you have your radiator on it’ll heat the whole room so no need to hold your hands over it, and if you have run out of gas then it’s equally pointless to hold your hands over a radiator that’s not on.

  6. didnt we have 9 days left 3 days ago? I’m guess we have a total of 9 days supply should the gas be turned off from europe.

this has been an known issue for a number of years though, we’ve been selling our excess in summer to europe for a cheap price and we buy some back over winter at a higher price. this has been the case since labour so idk why everyones shocked by it

  7. This fear porn needs to stop. The actual story says it’s worst case and unlikely to happen

These plans have always been there since well before Russia invaded Ukraine.

You know they have a plan for full scale nuclear war right? I guess that’s some horror reading like wise the mass chemical attack plans.

  8. 9 days supply, last thing I remember was one of the rags saying we only held 36 hours of storage or something similar? Which is it?

  9. Of course we don’t have gas storage like the other European countries. We have our own fields of North Sea gas and oil.

    What a non-story.

  10. Omg we’ve only got 9 days supply of heat?! In 9 days we’ll be plunged into an ice age because France has all the heat?! We’re doomed!

  11. “just 9 days left” of storage…which we aren’t touching yet because we still have plenty of supply from the North Sea and LNG at the moment.

If anyone is actually interested you can view live data of what’s going on with the Gas Transmission network [here](https://mip-prd-web.azurewebsites.net/). You can see from the “instantaneous supply” and “instantaneous demand” graphs that we’re currently filling up our storage. The main difference Vs previous years is we’re now importing a lot more gas via our LNG terminals and exporting a lot of gas to Europe via the interconnector at Bacton.

  12. And yet didn’t one of the gas companies record new profits and another or the same one future purchased gas at 0 cost?

  13. Any idea where we would store more than 9 days worth of gas? Most gas holders have been sold off and are being redeveloped into flats for people who can afford gas!!

  14. This country has no resilience built into any of its infrastructure. It’s the reason we have no gas storage. It’s the reason covid destroyed the NHS. It’s why general shocks eg financial crisis hit us harder than other similar countries.

At the same time – between crises we tend to do better than most similar countries (historically)

  15. While I get that 9 < 103, 103 days of gas for a whole country is not a lot. They should be afraid too.

  16. Isn’t that the maximum amount of gas the UK can store , because we never had the infrastructure in the first place . Then we decided to re open the rough natural gas storage in the North sea.

  17. People might be suprised that with all of this inflation happening digital currency requires a lot of data/electricity to upkeep its servers & maintenance in brief. People that invented digital currency know kwh cost by its current value. Electricity in other parts of the world is way more expensive than the UK and thats not the reason for blackouts corresponding with digital currency servers in brief.
Digital currency shouldve been banned from global use years ago. “Propaganda” about this freedom currency from corporate banks kept it going and resources are running low along with other things.

  18. Centrica have started recommissioning Rough which will increase UK gas storage by 50% this year. Only 20% of its original capacity is available this year. The reason it was shutdown before is because the tories previously pulled the funding to save just £70 million a year.

  19. When the headline starts with ‘FEARS’ you should probably not bother to read the article. They’re trying to scare you.
