Public funds used for €42m horse racing prizes in 2021

  1. Crazy, funding sports that serve communitys makes sense but horse racing doesn’t, its a rich man’s sport that thats only popular trough gambling

  2. Annually we give about 100 million to fund the horse racing and greyhound industries. And this is after the Prime Time story on the horrific cruelty dogs face in the industry.

Everyone complaining about the Government needing to spend more wisely and support more social initiatives should direct their energy here as a first step. There is no need for that money to be spent propping up those entertainment industries, it could be used for a lot of good elsewhere.

  3. As mentioned above betting tax brought in 88 million. Plus the horse racing industry provides thousands of jobs in rural Ireland. Also it is worth about 1.84 billion to the economy.

The Dublin Racing Festival, Lepoardstown at Christmas and Champions weekend all bring in thousands of international visitors. The Dublin Racing Festival for example had better races than Cheltenham.

Look at the results from around the world when it comes to the big races look how many of the top horses in the world have (ire) after them. We have the best Stallions, best breeders, best trainers on the flat (O’Brien) and best over jumps (Mullins) in the world, best jockey over jumps on the planet (Blackmore).

The prize money on offer is a big part of this reason, it’s why owners decide to buy Irish horses and keep them in Ireland.

Plus above all else we have absolutely hammered the Brits in Cheltenham for the last number of years.

I’d imagine it brings in far more revenue through tax, tourism and exposure than the government give it.

I’m one of the many who love racing but will probably have a bet three or four times a year.

  4. > The horse-racing industry receives financial support from the State through the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund, with €72.8m having been allocated to support Horse Racing in 2023, 80% of which can be applied to prize money.

For 70 million, we’d be well on our way to funding an F1 team. We should phone Eddie Jordan and see if he’d go back to it.

  5. People defending the subsidy are completely missing the point. It is hugely profitable and therefore is among the last industries you would ever give a subsidy to.

  6. Mean while the r/leagueofireland struggles away and Women’s National league even worse. God I hate this government

  7. Racing and racecourses pay for themselves in other countries through tote monopoly ! When you have bookmakers taking everything out ! Well your going to need taxpayers money .

  8. I foster greyhounds that are rescued from the industry. If you had any idea of what goes on with these animals… And that’s nothing to say about the horses. More horses are put down every year than greyhounds. Look into it peeps. Its a deep and dark hole that money is being thrown into. JP and Micheal may look well dressed at the horses, but there’s a whole lot of blood on their hands, and a lot of low paid wage slaves minding those animals. The animals are more valuable than the humans. It’s not an industry to be proud of.

  9. I’ve worked in racing yards. Practically slave labour looking after animals that are treated well while they’re worth something. I still have nightmares about some of the things I saw and did before I left.

  10. This governments mismanagement of fiscal matters like this and others along with the NO solution or efforts for economic and social development is on a scale that will never be truly comprehended.
They will distract with some other scenario or explain how they didn’t know.

  11. Why the hell is public monies being spent on these? I’d rather see this money go into the seriously underfunded mental health services, or fund public youth work! We might not have as many little dick heads running about.

  12. The fund this money comes from is ringfenced for sport which generates gambling.
This is the key line for me
In relation to sporting funding, Mr Murphy said the total core funding for all sports organisations in Ireland such as the FAI, GAA, Athletics Ireland, Swim Ireland the Special Olympics amounts to €15m.

“And yet here we are giving €70m a year to an already very wealthy industry.”

If you say look at the benefits from this industry with 70M behind it of course its doing well with that much money you can do what you want. It’s pretty hard to fail.
