  1. Free public transport hasn’t been shown to lead to an increase of users and a drop in cars.

Any increase in users seems to come from people who would otherwise walk or cycle.

So your better off spending the money that would replace the fares on making puic transport better to get people out of cars.

  2. Yup. 600m isn’t that much compared to what we could get out of it. If there’s any political party’s policy teams reading this, it’ll be the next smoking ban or plastic bag tax.

  3. I believe it should only be free if it would incourage more people to take public transport and relief traffic congestion.
I’m not sure that it would as people will usually take the quicker, less stressful option.

I don’t care if public transport is free. Going to work, i’m not going to hang about waiting for a bus schedule that might not even come on time, and the have to walk between bus stops possibly in the rain, when the car can get me door to door in a fraction of the time.

Similarly, if I lived in the city centre, I’m not bothered with the stress of rush hour traffic and finding parking, when I can get a bus and browse the Internet till I get to my destination. They could increase bus prices or make them free, still wouldn’t affect my choice

  4. No I think that public transport being free will only ruin it more as people will give less of a shit getting kicked off a bus or train when they paid nothing for it compared to if they bought a ticket or something like that

  5. I’d rather it cost what it costs now but actually work. I take the 27 a bus with 10% of lost km which is the one of the highest for Dublin bus. I also take a go ahead bus that never shows up.
Until public transport is more reliable people are going to do what they can to get on the road in a car.
