Football fans in England would support Qatar boycott – Seven in ten Britons say it is unacceptable for Qatar to host international sporting events

  1. Is it acceptable to cause the death of 1000s of people to build stadiums for the world cup. For a football tournament. A game.

If you are anyway involved with the world cup then you condone this. Players, commentators, celebs, and fans.

  2. The chattering classes are falling over themselves to say “they won’t be watching” and will end up demonising the proles for it.

  3. Wouldn’t it be something if high profile players/managers/commentators/pundits took a stand on this! They’d be making such a powerful statement that vile regimes like Qatar’s are not acceptable or compatible with the modern world. From this poll it looks like they’d have considerable support. It’s in their hands.

  4. This makes me laugh how many are willing to boycott are the same folk hurling racist and homophobic abuse to players via social media or on the stands.

  5. I’ve never felt so lacking in interest for a football World Cup. I’m a massive fan of football up to the 90s but stopped being a fan of modern football having become disillusioned with the too-high sums of money that are now changing hands.

World Cups were my four-yearly attempts to stay connected to the game. I love/loved them. The summer setting, the constant onslaught of games. This is no World Cup. It’s a massacre of human life and an affront to proper respect of people from all backgrounds. It’s a financially-underpinned farce. Regrettably, I might still peek at the result or highlights of a game here and there. I really don’t know yet. I feel bad for it.

  6. There’s enough premier league stadiums to host an FA backed “Globe Trophy” competition in the UK at very short notice.

No reason we couldn’t boycott and steal the world cup from under FIFAs nose to be honest.

  7. Not watching in order to mess with the money is basically the only way to show disapproval of the way the World Cup is being awarded and the ethics at FIFA. The only people FIFA might listen to is Coca Cola, Hyundai, Adidas etc if they feel the World Cup is no longer a good place to advertise.

  8. I told myself this year I can only watch one major sports event hosted by a country with terrible human rights. Ideal it would be zero but that was my compromise so I could watch the Winter Olympics, which for some reason I love. World Cup lost out, and I can’t say I’m too bothered. That’s not to say I judge those who do watch it, that’s someone’s choice.

Plus a WC at Christmas is fundamentally wrong.

  9. In all honesty, I couldn’t really give a shit. There are just more important things going on in my life than the human rights record of one of many countries with bad human rights records that is half a world away.

  10. I will be boycotting, but i understand why the players/nations arent.

Players have worked their whole lives to develop into the players they are and this is the pinaccle of their career.

For the nations withdrawing can have serious ramifications for future qualification of tournaments, so I get why the nations don’t withdraw.

I won’t blame them for participating. But I won’t be watching or supporting it in any way.

  11. Ask all the protesters to begin by boycotting the Quatari gas that they are consuming every single day….

  12. I saw something where Gary Lineker said they had discussed not going. Nice to see he hasn’t got the conviction to do it though lol. Amazing what a big pay check can do to your principles.

  13. The whole thing just feels flat this time. Disgusting hosts, wrong time of year, war in Ukraine overshadowing everything. My main goal right now is for me and my family to survive this bullshit situation the country is in economically.

  14. People saying boycott this are using clothes and phones made by slave workers. You just love to take the moral high ground.

  15. The newspapers will be full of articles about football supporters being arrested for breaking the local laws. Then going there will not seem such a good idea.
