Why is the UK struggling more than any other big country?

  1. Because we’ve voted for one non Tory prime minister the past 48 years

Edit: my maths is off it’s actually 43 years. I blame the Tory party!

  2. anything specific? most countries look to be heading for bad times. germany often gets mentioned as being especially vulnerable.

  3. The people in government have been skilfully siphoning the country’s resources into their friends’ pockets for the last 12 years

  4. We have a government of morons, an unelected house of Lords and a monarchy from the medieval era. 3 of the 4 nations hate England. Our NHS has 7 million on waiting lists and half the public sector is about to strike. Our schools are falling apart, we are in recession and no one can get a doctor or dentist. Our high streets are boarded up ghost towns. A call to the police or an ambulance, no one comes. Our old people die in their homes because care homes are full. Kids are abused because social services fail. Apart from that, the UK is just fucking brilliant

  5. Because people should realise that unless you go to Eton or a banking chum of these people you’re a pleb. Sure, you may have a small amount of money (a couple of million or a working class brexit supporter). But that doesn’t matter, both of you are plebs.

They’re here to squeeze the country dry like that fat duke from Dune. Thats what you get when you think they’re on your side. They literally never were anyone who isn’t a billionaire, a banking chum and the 1% is a pleb. Well done plebs. But you’ll vote them back in because turkey’s really love Christmas and the farmers an Etonian.

  6. In Britain we have a choice between a Tory government who have allowed Brexit and pander to large companies. In the past they were seen as economically competent but that has been blown out of the water recently.

Or labour who don’t tax the rich either but are supposed to be for the working classes who they sold out under Blair and brown .they are generally seen as economically incompetent.i don’t see that changing

So we are fucked whichever way we vote

  7. Excessive complacency and tendency to live in the past along with career politicians who are always on the ready to exploit the uneducated voter.

  8. Brexit which has been a headache for years and years, a pandemic which really messed up the world’s economy and now Putin’s war which has been an absolute catastrophic cherry on the apocalypse cake. It’s not rocket science..

  9. No! WE’RE A TINY LITTLE ISLAND THAT RULED THE WORLD I TELL YA! WE GAVE EM RAILROADS AND DEMOCRACY! RULE BRITTANIA LADS /s

  10. Because we were already running all our public services to the red line pre-covid, so many couldn’t handle the costs of covid. Some of these public services help people be productive at work (NHS, which has become basically non-functional) or help people get jobs (eg public library PC access). We saw the news that we have the worst healthcare access in all of Europe (including poorer countries).

Because we already had a low-wage economy (one of the few OECD country to have shrinking real wages and the only one to have GDP go up and real wages go down) full of people just making ends meet and people made even less money during covid and have no income buffer to weather the energy crisis.

Because Kwarteng’s mini-budget was seen as irresponsible and made the pound, and therefore everything we sell or make, lose value.

Because productivity is down due to Brexit-driven labour shortages. These can be alleviated either by training locals for some jobs (which takes time. Training schemes should have been set up before Brexit came into effect) or giving temporary visas, but either way we’ve taken a hit.

A lot of the EU (eg Spain, France, Germany, Poland) could be heading for a recession too though, with the energy prices driving up production costs. Quick google search shows there are fears the whole Eurozone could have a recession this year.

  11. There is a global recession brought on by Covid and Putin.

    BUT:

    * No one else has a Brexit anti-dividend making it worse.

    * No one else has to pay the billions to Hancock’s mates.

    * No one else has to pay the Truss Bill.

    The common theme: Tories

  12. Because we shit-canned our manufacturing sector and created an economy that is overwhelmingly driven by knowledge and banking as our primary exports.

Spending the past few decades within the EU, without in any way anticipating a future exit, made us reliant on cheap imports of european goods and services, specifically food and energy.

Brexit came out of nowhere and only woefully exposed that overreliance and lack of investment in our own home-grown manufacturing, energy and agriculture sectors to support our domestic consumption.

So being outside the common EU market, exposed to international socio-political factors that the EU’s other major economies insulated us from to some exent, while still being forced to import all these goods and services to keep ourselves affloat has basically fubar’d us.

So yeah, our politicians are short-sighted imbeciles who drove the UK off a cliff because their concerns have only ever been limited to themselves and their upper class british elite cronies.

I personally didn’t stick around. Emigrated to Canada in 2019 and I will never look back.

  13. After the brexit vote there were a lot of remainers talking Britain down and not having faith in the brexit project. There was so little zest for sovereignty among these people it was almost as if they didn’t know what it meant. These bad vibes have sent us into a spiral of despair from which it will be hard to recover. Once these remainers cheer up and start believing in Britain everything will be fine.

  14. Fucking Brexit we are the only country that has closed off its closest neighbours and it’s fucked us over good and proper

  15. Brexit. Late stage capitalism. Landlord economy. 12 years of austerity and shit governments that only seem to fuck over the poor and disabled whilst the rich rake in the cash. All whilst blaming immigration for the reason the country has gone down the shitter.

  16. The people who run the country have enough money to get out and live somewhere else, why the fuck wouldn’t they run it into the fucking ground if they can squeeze out as much capital as they can?

  17. There’s no long term plan. The government only cares about issues that will get them re-elected. People should care more about investing in infastructure, education, health and social care to maintain prosperity.

  18. This article is redundant. I understand the impartiality but if they won’t actually state the reasons it’s a waste of time. I usually like to defend the BBC but this is pathetic journalism.

  19. A succession of incompetent wealth-hoarding asset-stripping right wing Govts – which I’d also note Scotland haven’t voted for in 70+ years. There’s a reason we’re leaving. Good luck England. You’re going to need it.

  20. Well, I mean – people voted for Brexit, then voted for the tories…

It’s not hard to figure out, maybe constant austerity for nearly 2 decades while giving their mates and donors bungs isn’t a great idea?

  21. Because the swivel-eyed loons fucked us with Brexit and cutting everything over and over again is not a sustainable plan, but hey, it’s all the fault of immigrants!

  22. BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT BREXIT

  23. Government in shambles, key funding focused just on London. Brexit was a huge mistake that should never have happened. This also on top of being post Covid and having a health system that has been beaten into the ground by awful management and unimaginable wastes of money.
