Couple who fled Ukraine went back because of ‘terrible’ UK rental options

  1. I took my thai wife back to the uk for the first time ever. Were discussing possibilities of moving back someday.

We have decided thailand is sadly the better place to live. Rental prices are beyond stupid. They are >100% more what i paid as a student ten years ago. Thats a ridiculous increase. (glasgow)

I dont blame them. War is looking up for Ukraine and the uk housing market is awful. Western Ukraine is probably doable and relatively safe now

Edit : there are some really sad cunts messaging me on here. I honestly couldn’t care what you think. For what its worth my wife has a PhD which is a lot more than you sad wanks messaging me abuse lol.

I wouldn’t waste your time. Im not replying. Enjoy living your sad lonely life abusing people online cause your life is devoid of anything else to do

  2. You know your Country is really bad when people choose to go and live in a war zone instead.

    Well done Tories, well done.

  3. When my girlfriend moved to the UK from abroad, she was appalled at the state of rental housing in the UK. Now I’ve moved abroad, I can see why.

  4. I dunno about this one. I like to dunk on the uk property market as much as the next man. More than most probs. But this one is a bit odd.

It’s an edge case – “British student brings his foreign born wife back home so doesn’t qualify for Homes For Ukraine scheme and faces the same challenge that lots of students, immigrants grads and low income families face in not having proof of consistent earnings” doesn’t make as pithy a headline I guess.

Also, the “can’t find anywhere suitable for a couple for £1,500 pcm” thing. In Sheffield or Nottingham. Come on.

  5. It’s true, there are a lot of nice places in the UK – but at the lower end, it’s pretty dire. Worse than most other western European countries I would say.

  6. It’s not just rental market. The quality of housing overall in the uk sucks. Too expensive for what you get.

  7. This is a total non story.
They have family in Ukraine and realised they could live there and work remotely so they took that option.
The rental/housing market in the UK is shit but for a young couple with no kids and £1500 a month who can both work remotely there are plenty of options.
They saw an opportunity to have UK salary and live somewhere cheap and took that option.

  8. I’ve no idea where they’re getting their £1,500 per month figure from. I literally live in Sheffield myself and pay £750 per month for a 3-bed semi.

  9. While landlords or mostly agents have somewhat unrealistic requirements if you’re a first-time renter, they’re there just to weed out the people who won’t be a risk.

Landlords love a stable income. Can’t have someone who isn’t likely to be able to pay rent on time every time. It sucks but it’s the way it is

Alternatively, they could’ve went the SpareRoom route (even though options are limited for couples) and gotten something way cheaper in that area.

  10. Seeing as the tories love their alliterative slogans they’ve another one to add to their repertoire now.

    Magic money tree

    Brexit means brexit

    Coalition of chaos

    And now…

    Worse than a war zone

  11. Are content creators self employed or employed and claiming top ups via Universal Credit?

There’s many reasons why they failed to find a place, it’s made a grabbing headlines, but the facts are obscure.

  12. Kind of tangential, but I am more annoyed that I can’t just go work and live in the UK. You know, given the whole “Commonwealth” thing we are supposed to have.

It was literally easier for me to move to Sweden and work there.

(I know I can go for a holiday to the UK easy peasy but I want to work.)

Anyway, I guess my point is that I empathize because things not making sense seems to be the standard.

  13. Well this is funny..I’m the guy in the article. I see a few comments and it’s worth explaining a few things cause, frankly, the article took quotes out of context and twisted them

    1. People say that we had a very high budget yet couldn’t find something and that begs belief. I said to the guy we were prepared to go that high.

2.. My wife had a Ukraine job and me a freelance job I had started when the war started, because I lost my Ukraine work. We had no tax history for a while and she no credit history. It just makes it harder. After a while we just got tired and wanted our own place as a married couple who work online. We didn’t want government funding, we just wanted to use our money to rent a place we wanted. I don’t see why that’s seen as demanding.

    3. We didn’t just immediately go “let’s go back to Ukraine” , no we decided to make it easier for ourselves, travel, stay month in month abroad, save money, come back to UK with 6 months of work history and everything in order for landlords to be more ready. We visited Ukraine, as said in the article, and actually felt happy being back. Survivors guilt is a thing and for my wife she felt immeasurably happy

The article headline spun it badly, frankly. I’m happy to answer questions

  14. is this supposed to be a burn on us? coz i read it as ‘economic migrants chasing the greenest grass’

if this is even real. don’t refugees get PLACED somewhere by the government? crappy rental options shouldn’t be a factor

  15. As someone who’s dealt with trying to get a non European wife into England none of this sounds like it’s about the rental market. It’s the bullshit immigration laws that ask for proof of income or savings for 6 months, which basically means unless you’re rich enough to just have £60,000 lying about you have to be long distance for at least a year (6 months working for the paperwork, then another 6 months application time.)

Although saying that it’s still the Tories fault. Cunts.

  16. I came to the UK in the hopes of a free trip to Rwanda. Now I’m stuck in Premier Inn having to eat rotten food. /jk

    The UK sucks

  17. My dad also fled Ukraine to the UK ([he did an AMA while he was stuck at the Ukraine/Slovakia border for 60+ hours](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/t3wdna/iama_refugee_at_the_slovakiaukraine_border/)) and then returned to Ukraine a couple of months later. He said he was made to feel welcome in the UK, he and his wife was working and his daughter had started going to school… but he was unhappy being back in the UK again and “wanted to go home”.

I still think he’s a bit nuts to back into a warzone, but hey, he’s still alive. So far. Gotta do what makes you happy, I suppose.

  18. If this article is true, I don’t understand why they had such a problem.

I have got a nice modern two-bedroom flat in a good area with lots of local transport links to the city. Lots of amenities a Highstreet with good shops and three lager supermarkets including an Aldi and I only pay £400 a month and my landlord has told me that she doesn’t intend to increase my rent unless she has too.

So, I don’t know what these people’s expectations were when they came here but maybe they were too high. You can spend £1500 on an apartment near where I live but what I have suits me and my requirements.

  19. How was he able to leave if Ukraine has banned all Ukrainian men of fighting age from leaving and fual citizenship doesn’t protect you from drafts unless you give up the Ukrainian citizenship?

  20. Yep it is fucked up i ve been living jn London for the last 5 years came from Greece with my wife . I sat down yesterday and did some financial calculations for the year 2023 and by the way things are going, we won’t be able to save a single penny first time this has happened to us since we have been here. And we re seriously considering to leave as well, even though we like it here , the culture and everything.
Even my boss is considering going to france to live permanently and he is 56 born in London, I could see it in his face he was sad when he was telling me.

  21. Anyone else doubt this is not likely really true, and think the reality is likely much more complex even than as presented, like with various missing details?

  22. They should have gone to Scandinavia instead. They would have gotten refugee status there too.

Why go for 10th place when you can aim for the podium.

  23. I know people from Hong Kong who have the money to pay a years rent in advance and still get turned down, others who are retired and have money but it still takes them months to buy something. The requirements and the market is kind of crazy.

  24. A lot of people in the comments have absolutely no clue how bad housing is in the UK. We live in the smallest average accommodation by square foot per capita in Europe. So it wasn’t just exorbitant prices but also getting a comparatively crap place compared to what they could have had in Western Ukraine for less. I have heard similar things from recent migrant dissidents from Hong Kong who have been shocked by how rubbish housing is in this country. The vast majority of Ukraine is relatively safe and nowhere near shelling/missile range. Frankly a smart move on their part.
