Epic

Epic from Finland

  1. The happiest country, the most hardworking and it has most metal bands per capita… You just can’t stop being epic Finland, can’t you?

  2. As this post is aimed to address the racism issue, as immigrant I do have an opinion.

Like of course as in every country there’s obvious racism and i don’t think Finland is any worse or better. It would be nice though if there wasn’t, don’t get me wrong.

What I do feel is the adverse of globalization. Fins are proud of their country, their local produce, and they should be! But I feel they take it too far for a lot of things. The requirement of Finnish language at the job, as long as you don’t have contact with customers, why? I’ve been working in a few companies in other countries that only serve local market, but the company work floor language was English. Direct boss was Brittish , Australian CEO, Indian CIO. Plenty of native top level management as well. It works, is still a very successful company and still holds the native values.

Finnish companies are excluding a lot of talent merely for ethnicity and language, while they are already short in skilled workers. It’s sad, because foreign talents really want to blend in and live the Finnish way, but they are often not given the opportunity to participate and help keeping Finland, in my opinion, to be one of the greatest countries in the world.

  3. Yea, but what’s up with your stock market!? It makes the US bubble look like bargain prices.

P.S. love Finns. Married one. Can Sauna to prove it.

    Edit: just saw it 😂

  4. For what it’s worth, I love this country but I’m originally from the UK and I’m often shocked by the overt racism I see here. It feels like a lot of things that are not ok in other countries are a lot more permissible here.

For example, suukot chocolates and what they used to be called, and the racist images that were on the box until VERY recently (like 1-2 years ago I remember seeing them in the supermarket and freaking out, it was disgusting!). Clubs in Helsinki having an overt policy for not letting in black men, supposedly designed to “protect Finnish women”, so there’s also a hidden element of misogyny there too. Narratives we see in the newspaper with the idea of “foreign men taking Finnish women”. People touching the hair of people of colour. Businesses not hiring people with foreign names (particularly names that are non-white).

A lot of it may be a result of naivety, because Finland was (and still is) a very white population for so long. But I feel like there’s very little excuse for some of this stuff now the world has become much more global and connected.

P.s. I’m also not saying that the UK isn’t terrible for racism too – our press in particular is a complete shitshow.

  5. Finland has traditionally been “alone” so the trust towards foreigners is quite fragile. Then there’s the practical facts like Finland being a welfare state which makes it very easy to hate immigrants since they get so much government benefits, then there’s the massive language barrier, even second generation immigrants might never learn proper Finnish if they speak another language at home.

Then there’s the fact that Finns are generally anti-religion, while most black and brown people here are hardcore Muslims from Africa and Middle-east.

Finland doesn’t have any older integrated non-white minorities like some other European countries, like Finland got its first black people in early 90s.

  6. None of these are true. Happines part is for they asked in the questionaire if this is the best possible life u can have. Finns actually dark mindset tells them: yes this is best because it will not get any better And it cant but most definetly can get worse. Its just toughtpatterns And way of questioning

  7. I don’t understand how some people even living in finland don’t think finland is racist, we used to call a krembo (this is just my attempt at somehow translating it): “the kiss of a n****r”, but if I remember correctly it was changed in 2001

PS I know other countries also use the word in the name but that’s not a good defense against racism and “oh but it was 20 years ago” is not one either

  8. Finnish coverment and municipilitys are trying to create Jobs without pay or free labor program all the time. Like social benefits work program or free internship program.

You get society minimal benefits from these but you must work 30 hours a week, also your social work dosen’t give you right to add on your retire fund.

I mean working on a 30 hours a week and getting a 1000 euros for a month is low amount, especially when Living costs are really high on Finland: rent, food, electricity, gasoline, taxes and VAT on products.

There is no work healthcare benefit.

You have no right to holiday days with pay.

Also if you are on this “intern” or social benefits program an working on business, they don’t have to pay you anything and after that is over, they have no reason to hire you for work.

Only reason to create these programs is to make unemployment records to look better by faking it.

  9. Working without pay on minimal social benefits in fear of heavy punishment from coverment and municipality. Only to make unemployment records look more better.

  10. Finns hardest workers of Europe, my ass with all their holidays and ‘mökki työkaveri meetings’. Pls take a look at Dutch working culture and competitiveness of this country 😂

  11. When everyone is the same and rejects all different people without thinking about it then it’s only natural that you’d be happy. They can focus on other things. When you try to champion for others and scream and shout to the heavens, that’s when people stop being happy

  12. is racism in finland that bad? i’m a black japanese american and i’m considering moving to finland to raise kids, so any insight would be great

  13. I am from Russia, I came to visit friends in Finland. I heard that in Europe they are trying to smooth the corners and call peoples / cities with words that do not have a negative connotation in the past. And so I asked what the gypsies are called here, and I heard such a racist but so familiar to the Russian word “чёрные” (mustalaisia).

  14. I am a comfortable immigrant.. I have been living comfortably from home ( Africa ) before coming to Finland on an adventurous quest and not to seek refuge .. I can leave anytime I want to nor stay at my choice and this country has been good to me .. honestly I have nothing bad to say about Finland apart from the climate being a challenge but that’s minor ..am sorry I guess it’s my destiny .. Mina olen musta mias ✊🏾

  15. It’s discouraging to read some of the commentaries here. Speaking in defense of racism is only supporting the point made by this little meme video. Finland IS racist, and people don’t want to know better. That’s shameful. That’s what Americans get blamed for. Willing ignorance.

  16. How is Finland particularly racist towards black people? As far as I can tell the most disliked groups are the roma and somalis.

  17. I’ve been living in Finland since i was 1 / 2 years old. I speak Finnish as my mother tongue. I’ve been called neekeri many times and i am white. I never met this kind of behavior from anyone in other EU countries. I am originally from Serbia and that country has seen less africans than Finland has, yet we actually accept them to our society there. In Finland the discrimination is a huge problem, it took me over 4 years to even find a job as a cleaner because school didn’t work out for me at all, i was easily left out and i ended up being an outcast. The only people who accepted me to work / friendships were other foreign people. I got my security guard license and it took me 1.5 years to even be accepted as a security guard. There is not aggressive racism here really but the discrimination is very similar to japan= if you are a foreigner you will be discriminated to have a job. At school i remember overhearing my teacher whispering things in another room to other students to work here ” together ” and avoid me. I confronted the teacher about it and of course she played clueless. As i made a complaint to the principal and other guys then the teacher admitted 30% of it with some small lies and never meant to ” hurt me “.

When i was 5 years old i was playing beyblade with other kids, and suddenly this other kid parents showed up to my face and started randomly accusing me of ” stealing ” a beyblade. I still remember her and his face, looking at me so angrily like i don’t belong here. Eventually telling me to leave the playground. Eventually turns out that my big brother faced the same issue ( he’s older than me almost 3 years ) and he told my parents to avoid these guys. My parents wanted to kill them so badly since we came from war from bosnia and my parents endured so much shit they thought they would find peace in this country.

Finland, among most racist and discriminated country in EU, but not admitting it and rarely showing it.

I don’t hate Finland, but i have lost respect and love for it. Mostly because how hard it’s to live here as a foreigner to other countries. I have lost many years to just trying to find a shitty job and friends but it’s not easy. But i do believe Finland is a very beautiful country and not everyone is the same of course. I have met some wonderful people and even dated few Finnish girls. I used to have millions of Finnish friends when i was a kid but as Finns grew up, they went colder at me even though i’ve always been a kind person and treated others well. Not to mention i am very attractive guy so it’s a bonus i guess. I keep hearing how attractive i look yet nobody ever shows any efforts to make friends with me.

I was offered to move to my aunt in Germany, i am gonna accept that. I am going there in 1 month. But i will not give up Finland. Finland ( especially Helsinki, Vantaa and Espoo ) has that unique beauty that i find euphoric. I just love walking in Helsinki. It has a different vibe that most countries don’t. Of course i will find more love, friends, work and other activities in bigger cities but i guess after living in Finland for 23 years i feel at home. But man it fucking sucks being unemployed and lonely as fuck as almost 25 years old good looking guy. I can’t even get jobs such as warehouse at all man after at least 500 applications even though i have 2-3 week of warehouse experience from TET jakso.

There are good people though, i have many good memories from many good Finnish people. I can’t just forget that and blame whole Finland for some shitty people who would rather have Finnish friends and Finnish workers. Generally speaking Finns are really calm and i have no problems walking anywhere as a foreigner ( despite being Finnish citizen ). The only problem for foreigners is getting a job here and friends. Unless you are extremely social guy who knows how to chat and make friends just like that, i used to do that but now being lonely and left out these last 4-5 years.. i don’t even know how to be social anymore.
