Homophobic and transphobic hate crimes surge after end of Covid lockdowns: The number of homophobic and transphobic hate crimes recorded by police in the UK has risen to the highest level since the Covid pandemic began.

  1. The fuck is wrong with people. Just let folk live their lives who they love is none of you’re buisness so long as everyone is consenting.

  2. > However, several police forces said the increase could instead reflect improvements in how they are recorded and greater public awareness of how to report offences.

    > Particularly in recent years, and with more people moving their abuse online

Makes it a very difficult situation to analyse.

Seems to me ( and I claim not expertise) that *if* there were for example less possibility of physical violence or confrontation on the street then that would be a very good thing and that what counts as abuse online is still rather an evolving issue with, I imagine, prejudiced people being more vocal because , for example, of trans issues being in the news ( a fact not an excuse for their behaviour) – but there may also be a changing and possibly expanding sensitivity towards what counts as abuse on line ( does someone saying gender is to any extent biological online count as a hate crime?) and more willingness to report either.

Note that I would say increases in online abuse could lead to abuse in person.

It In other words this Isn’t a very informative article without more details of the break down of the figures?

  3. There’s been a real explosion of daily or weekly fear stories in the press and most written are not by anyone trans.

Feels like this all came about because trans rights to have a reduced fees and waiting times were being voted and consulted on. Or evangelicals using it as a wedge issue

  4. Could this be because a lot of people spent an awful lot of time on the internet during lockdown and absorbed an American viewpoint and way of thinking on this?

In America if you support LGBT equality then you’re a commie socialist Democrat, and if you want them all to burn to death then you’re a patriotic Republican. It’s a fucking political issue over there for whatever reason.

Also America has a lot of the extremist type trans people who film shop workers whilst screaming because they were called “Sir” when they don’t identify as Sir. Those videos go viral and are damaging to the trans cause because the majority of people see it and think “what a fucking lunatic all trans people are” when actually 99% of them really wouldn’t start smashing up a shop for being misgendered.

I was in Camden the other day and they have a few rainbow coloured zebra crossings. There’s homophobic graffiti all over them. I’ve even seen homophobic graffiti in fucking Brighton for god sake. 5 years ago I think British society was in a far better place in terms of progression for LGBT rights. We’ve regressed, we’re becoming more American by the day.

  5. Imagine that, A populist Government riding the coat tails of the US culture war and attack on LGBT has lead to an increase in attacks on those members.

    Edit: a word

  6. I might just be an idiot, but the headline says it’s at the highest level *since the COVID pandemic began*, which just seems obvious to me? After the end of the lockdowns, people were interacting with each other again, so crimes like hate crimes that rely on interaction with other people are obviously going to rise?

Edit: not downplaying it at all, these crimes are abhorrent

  7. >The number of homophobic and transphobic hate crimes recorded by police in the UK has risen to the highest level since the Covid pandemic began.

I’ll put my hands up and admit I haven’t read the article, but surely the above is true for **most** forms of violent crime? Why is ‘the beginning of the pandemic’ any kind of useful metric?

I’m not trying to diminish the experiences of anyone who has suffered homo/transphobic hate crime, but the headline is compete and utter garbage.

  8. I don’t think this is as shocking as its titled it too be, it’s basically saying hate crimes have risen to a similar level as just before we all got locked in our homes and had very little contact. You’ll probably see the same ‘surge’ with other crimes. If it had been highest rate in 10-15 years then that’s definitely significant but not in this case.

  9. Shocking when the entire media and political establishment is encouraging transphobia every fucking day, so shocking.
