France threatens EU legal action if UK does not issue more fishing licences

  1. What route would this litigation go through?

I understood that the dispute mechanism was the previously agreed route for these disagreements, but it seems like France has ruled this out.

  2. What a climbdown. Went from threats to blockade all trade by X deadline in a few days, to threats to ask to the EU to start the official dispute mechanism a month later, which France always seemed to want to avoid using.

    >“If Britain today gives a few dozen extra licences as a token of goodwill . . . we will take that into account,” he said,

lol. So desperate for anything they can hold up to their electorate as a “win” to back out of the issue. Probably shouldn’t have escalated such a stupid situation just for election PR so much in the first place then.

  3. I wonder whose idea it was to push for the change of the fishing deal in the last moment before the agreement was reached? One might think that these licences should have been part of the deal in the first place to avoid any conflicts later.

    >We do not recognise this imposed deadline and we need to move on from the numbers and starting applying conditions to those we have issued.
.. In recent weeks we have received more documents and even on Thursday at 16:00, we received another batch of information from the EU, which was all mixed up and of poor quality

    >We maintain our position that we will give licences when we get quality evidence which meets the terms of the agreement. The French have said that if we don’t provide the licences they want today they will invoke procedures within the agreement and start legal action. They appear to want us to give them licences that do not qualify under the terms of the TECA but we are not prepared to go down that route. Our proposals on that are well advanced and we are ready to present them to the EU. Our position is clear: we have issued all the licences we can on the evidence available and we expect the EU to issue licences to the Jersey boats that have applied to fish in French waters.

    >The only way we can successfully face any legal challenge is sticking to the rules and applying the terms of the TECA accurately. The EU has been interrogating our methodology daily and has not been able to find fault with it.
If the French do resort to the courts, we need our records and processes to stand up to scrutiny. And the only way we can do that is by sticking by the rules.

In other words: “We are not afraid to prove that we are in the right, so bring it on!”

  5. Why do the French take such an antagonistic stance against the UK? I know there are a lot of disputes between the 2 countries atm but I don’t see the UK threatening France every other week.

It just seems odd, it is like every dispute the French take personally and has to let the world know they are offended.

Doesn’t change the fact that we are still one of the closest allies on earth.
