No jail for ‘nice man’, 73, caught growing drugs at his Cork home

  1. The judge imposed a three-year suspended sentence but warned: “If you come back for a third time there will be no more chances.”

  2. “Growing drugs” the slope-browed idiocy oozing from that headline is just too low a blow to the intellect for this hour of the morning.

  3. Why is this shit still happening in Ireland in 2021? What percentage of the population actually thinks making cannabis illegal is a good idea? Living in D8, it sickens me to see drug gangs getting this money and wrecking the area.

  4. > “Gardaí systematically harass and attack the lives of decent people, one is spared for their advanced age”.

Should the title, but instead we have a backwards media that still supports the war on drugs/people.

  5. >Gardaí went to his home with a search warrant on June 11, 2021. They found 40 cannabis plants in pots.

What a complete waste of gardai time and resources.

  6. “Growing drugs” always tickles me😂 wonder what drugs they were growing? Cocaine? An MDMA tree…? Glad they didn’t get sentenced, laughable law anyway.

  7. He should buy it from crazed murderous gangs like the rest of the population!!!! How dare he take money out of the hands of criminals

  8. What a waste of everyone’s time.

I’m not even going to get the 30 seconds back I spent replying to this 😂

  9. I wonder how they even found out if he lives in some remote place in West Cork? Maybe some busybody neighbour of his ratted him out?

  10. Progress is being made.
Just to note, I don’t smoke and fully support ye all not being fucking imprisoned for smoking a plant which renders you useless compared to the damage alcohol causes.

  11. Disgrace letting him slip through the fingers of the law. No doubt he’ll be off to Bogata or Mexico and continue his life of cartel crime. How many innocent lives has he ruined? zombie kids hooked on his super drugs. Terrible!

  12. It’s a shame Ireland is so backwards when it comes to drug policies. The amount of benefits legalising cannabis for the society compared to its cons is worth it.

    – increases revenue from new businesses – 100s of millions a year minimum
    – More tax paid from the above as a side effect
    – Less money spent on sentencing cannabis users
    – Less dependency on using other harmful drugs.
    – The medical benefits such as being the most effective pain med that isnt as addicitve for example.
    – More tourism. FFS – we’re the green isle. Has no one thought of the good marketing we can do with that lol.

By legalizing it like the Netherlands does. You’ll see quickly enough by making it legal, it loses its attraction. Its mostly tourists in the Netherlands that smoke like idiots.

  13. Just legalize it, christ mate.

All anyone is doing by keeping it illegal is incentivizing crime anyway. Might grow (lol) the irish economy too by having weed legalized.

  14. I have codeine prescribed to me for pain relief. I have a chronic condition. I’m not going to get better.

I used to use cannabis… which was just as effective, had fewer side effects and didn’t mess up my stomach / guts.

I quit because I could only get my hands on cannabis resin, which had to be inhaled… and eventually I noticed it in my lungs.

Which would be cheaper (if available on prescription), is less addictive, and better for my body?

  15. I’m aware of someone, of pension age, who suffers from multiple sclerosis and grows their own cannabis. They had a knock on the door by a cop… who asked them NOT to put the plant on the front windowsill, facing the street, where he and his colleagues walked past regularly on their beat.

That was proper community policing. 👏🏻 that cop!

  16. Christ just leave the poor man to grow his weed in peace. Its 2022, Germanies currently on the path to legalise it completely for adult use for fuck sake. The article says with his very basic cultivation set up it was unknown if all the immature plants would even make it to adulthood. Also the judge accepted that he was not growing to sell. At what point does a law just become so pointless that Garda/judges etc stop enforcing it? Or will they continue to enforce anything, no matter how daft. Not hurting anyone, minding his own business but our tax payers money had to be used to drag this man through the courts. Actually makes me fucking angry. And a good percentage of the politicians who make our laws have admitted to smoking weed in the past. Stephen Donnelly and Leo Varadkar to Name two.

  17. Considering there’s people who will chop you up, put you into GAA gear bags and cremate your body parts in burning cars, I think there’s more reason to jail these fuckers then some aul man minding his own business growing some plants. Raithneach is good for your health and helps with pain and your rarely a menace to society on it (as long as you don’t drive). Alcohol however, a legal drug can make you murder someone without you even realising it

  18. Think about how absurd it is to jail somebody that grew a natural plant that is barely different from smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol. Its insane! Its a plant!!!

  19. I’ve lived in Canada, where cannabis has been legal for years now. Not just decriminalized, but legal. Do you know what happened to the society when they legalized weed?

    Nothing. Nothing happened.

The society didn’t collapse. The use of harder drugs didn’t increase. The level of addiction didn’t change. Weed became just another item on the grocery list like milk, beer, and spaghetti. There was a brief “woohoo weed!” but then it became, “meh, weed.” In fact the Canadian government expected higher tax revenue from weed sales. Once the novelty wore off people just treated it like wine and beer
