Just Stop Oil protesters bring traffic to a halt on the M25 causing long queues

  1. I can only imagine how bad the traffic jams are around the M25 with half of it closed at rush hour.

  2. I agree with their cause, and understand why they feel direct action is needed – many movements had to engage it before anything changed, and it’s very fair to say regular protest does fuck all.

However, apart from targeting things that won’t get the public on side, this sort of thing, and the public outcry, is golden for a Home Secretary who is in the spotlight to act on things and also wants to bring in draconian anti-protest laws. I wonder if they realise they are giving her ammunition?

  3. It’s a real pain in the neck. It’s adding a good 15 minutes to my commute and I don’t even use the M25 , I just have to drive more or less parallel to it for most of the journey (between 13 and 11). On a good day it 35 minutes to do 6 miles. It was actually over an hour last week.

That being said I support these and the train strikes and anyone else who has the time and energy to protest, I see their point. Yes it’s an inconvenience, so is living in a country which is mostly too hot and under water, which is where we are headed.

I get the feeling that these protests are out of desperation as trying all the “legal” forms of protest have as usual achieved nothing.

  4. The hypocrisy of society is crazy.

The moment we sanctioned Russia over their invasion of Ukraine everyone thought it was brilliant. By ruining the economy and putting pressure on ‘regular’ people they could then revolt and force their government into action.

But the moment people peacefully protest and inconvenience the ‘regular’ people here all of a sudden it’s a menace and they want the police involved.

There is sadly no other way to do this. The people rich enough to bypass climate change until they are no longer here to experience the issues caused by it will not care until they are made to care. This is a huge issue, we have ignored it for too long. Fair play to them for raising the issue even more.

If you’re pissed off by this, write to your local MP. Push for change, because sitting in an extra 15 minutes traffic might inconvenience you, but an inhospitable earth will inconvenience your children a smidge more.

  5. the secretary general of the UN said yesterday that we are on a highway to hell, and our only choice now is to cooperate on climate change or perish. But all we see in the headlines is how upset we should all be that traffic was slowed down this morning.

    We are all so fucked

  6. I love this subs crazy flip-flop over “Just Stop Oil” actions,
like you guys are apoplectic, have you even been affected by this in anyway by this specific protest?

  7. Honestly at this point I couldn’t care less what happens, I understand we’re fucked but not much we can do unless the mega rich and those who actually have power to make changes do something about it.

They have known for years about climate change and it’s effects but did nothing about it I doubt they’re going to change their minds anytime soon so just sit back and enjoy the highway to hell 🙁

But those of us blaming the protesters need to stop and realise it’s for our benefit. I was one of those idiots who despised the Just Stop Oil lot but honestly they’re doing more than half us idiots berating then on reddit. So more power to them!

  8. In 70 years when the world in in absolute turmoil and the generations dealing with it curse the inaction of today maybe they’ll dig up the comments where people are saying jail them for 10 years. They’ll be absolutely astonished that people were protesting something so clearly happening and people were more concerned about being late to work.

  10. They can protest as much as they want. It’s going to do naff all.

At the moment all it is doing is pissing off the public who have to go to work to survive and pay high energy bills. To which they are then late, pay is docked and they struggle even more to pay the bills.

If they protested outside No 10 or on the roads near it, then that would get the Governments attention.

Even if the UK went some how fully green and used no oil or gas, the world is still screwed as you have bigger polluters who don’t give a crap. All they care about is the ££££/$$$$ as that’s what’s letting them have a nice life.

Everyone can do their bit but even if we did, it’s already too later. The entire globe has to change its ways but it really doesn’t want to and that’s what is going to screw us all.

  11. They would do better campaigning for Nuclear. They offer no alternative other than people are bad for the planet and it would be better off without us. That’s basically a death cult.

  12. “Dey iz causin’ moar pollution ’cause of all dis traffic, hurrrr durrrr”.

Do you…do you not turn off your engine when stuck in traffic? Just sitting there blissfully burning your own money? You realise turning the vehicle off is an option, right?

  13. This will NEVER make the government take action to stop oil, all it does is inconvenience members of the general public.

  14. Yep keep attacking the general public. This won’t blow up in their face at all and won’t give politicians a good excuse to further curtail the right to protest.

    *golf claps*

  15. As an environmentalist myself I find myself conflicted with this method. Like I get their frustrated but is inconveniencing the lives of regular folk really the best way to go about this? Then again idk, I’ve never done a protest

  16. Just Stop Oil have tried and are trying as much as possible to raise awareness of IMMINENT COLLAPSE of our ecosystem and people are worried about other shit…THERE IS NO OTHER SHIT!!! This is our (humanities) last resort!!!

  17. Broke: Protesting

Woke: Subverting markets through the p2p manufacturing of alternative technology

Bespoke: direct sabotage of markets and oil producing infrastructure through strategic mass fraud and acts of vandalism.

  18. I wish people would get off their high horse when members of the public who are affected, some of which are on the sub, get quite cross when the motorways end up backlogged. No one likes being stuck in traffic for hours and people are generally more miffed if the destination is important like a hospital appointment or god forbid something they wanted to go enjoy, like a day out somewhere or pre-booked events…

Not everything needs to be 24/7 doom and gloom.

  19. I read the other day about Dutch people protested billionaires by preventing their private jets from flying. This is what the protesters could be doing, instead of targeting people who can’t make a difference and aren’t responsible for this situation

  20. Added 3 hours to my commute totaling 4.5 hours this morning. Yes, it’s bloody annoying and destroyed my day but totally behind their message and commitment to the cause.

    Keep it going.

  21. Stuck in it this morning going to stanstead airport to pick someone up, should of been 2 hour journey ended up being 4.5 hours.

Did support them before this journey, understood the immense frustration when stuck in it (half days driving turned into full day) and still support them.

Drove under one young male protestor around junction 14 or so cw, whoever you are good on you, you’re a brave soul and this country needs more people willing to stand for what they believe in. Even more admiration for the self sacrifice in the face of ridiculous punishments from a government that has failed us a thousand times worse than blocked roads.

I am a little lost what I can practically do regarding my car – I own a fun gas guzzler of a car but which I only do around 10k miles a year in – I’d like to drive something more eco friendly but I don’t understand how selling my car would help much (presumably someone else would buy and drive it). Would support higher taxes or something of that ilk though.

  22. My parents were caught up in the traffic, trying to get back from their trans Atlantic flight and Caribbean cruise. The irony was not lost on me when they started complaining. Their hybrid car is very nice though.
