I think in ways its a bit of a misnomer as all Police Forces have aspects of units who carry more weapons or more weapons and tactics over others.
Ireland is the same and so to say we are unarmed is not exactly true. For the most part we are not however all Detectives and the vast majority of Specialist Units are.
Now a more interesting stat would be how many countries have their police forces armed with less lethal weapons like Tasers and others. As that is where the vast majority of encounters lay in ways!
Used to be in and out of Ballyfermot/Cherry Orchard daily for work, would see armed Garda all of the time with SMG’s. Traffic stops and stuff like that. Sometimes they’d just pull us over in unmarked cars because we drove an unmarked van around ourselves
Yup the PSNI are tooled up
I’ve seen the Amred Gardaí arrest someone before. Fella was just sitting in his car outside the shop. Spoke to him very politely and all that.
In the south plain clothes Guards are everywhere and carry guns.
New Zealand has them too
In Longford the Gardai carry guns. That should a little black blip in Ireland.
There was this detective a couple years ago in castlerea. First day out with the gun he managed to get himself short dead with it
Assume this means beat cops. Our detectives do, as do our special response cops. (ERU, ARU, MP, DS)
Also Ireland per capita one of the safest (non – violent) nations on the planet. 3rd on the Global Peace Index. – (GPI) is a report produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) which measures the relative position of nations’ and regions’ peacefulness. Number 1 Iceland, number two NZ
Why the fuck is NI blue?
Just another reason I’m thankful to be here rather that in the US.
Respect to Botswana!
We also literally have a unit that drives around called the armed response unit.
This is a shite map. It should be countries whose regular beat cops don’t carry, or something. It’s just all wrong 😂
Further proof that New Zeland is literally just the Ireland of the South
Don’t we have an armed unit? Garda near where I live was shot by an escaped convict who reportedly took the gun from the Garda, if my memory serves me right
They also carry guns in London and Belfast.
Approximately 1/3 of all serving Garda carry guns. Special branch, detectives armed response units and protection duty.
In Ireland normal police don’t carry guns, the armed support is never too far away though when they need it

I genuinely thought countries with armed police were in the minority. How would you feel if the Gardaí were armed?
In the Netherlands they do carry guns, but they get sued to oblivion when they dare to use them…
They carry guns in the North.
In the north they do
Erm… cops in the top right corner of this island carry guns…
This has been posted before and it’s utter nonsense.
Chinese police are predominantly unarmed.
Indian police are predominantly unarmed.
South Korean police are predominantly unarmed.
Probably loads more, those are just the ones I’ve been to and know.
