Age of consent in Europe.

  1. I feel like a lot of these are misleading. There’s a huge difference between what is immoral, what ought to be stopped, and the mechanism for stopping it.

Personally, for enforcement I’d be much more in favor of a fluid age of consent, based on both partners’ ages, and perhaps considering power dynamics. If two 13-year-olds have sex, that’s a mistake, but they shouldn’t end up on a sex offender list for the rest of their lives for that mistake. If a penalty were to fall somewhere, perhaps the adults in their lives. On the other hand, if a 30-year-old school teacher has sex with a 14-year-old, the teacher should go to prison for a very long time.

That’s just me. Other societies can come to different conclusions, and that should be okay too. Cultural imperialism is a bigger problem than most of the issues it tries to tackle. Cultures can especially come to different conclusions on mechanisms. Tough-on-[x] laws sound great on paper, but rarely have the desired impact. Experimenting with what does and doesn’t work seems reasonable.

  2. age of consent and legality of having sex with a minor is such a weird thing
