All residents in canton Aargau have to attend a half day information event on the role of the Civil Defence unit – or they will be fined.

It applies to everyone who’s not in the army – so that includes women and foreigners.

The cantonal parliament backed the enforcement – especially the Swiss People’s Party, the centre party and the Socialists. The Liberals and Greens have their reservations.

It’s hoped the meetings will persuade more people to volunteer.

Anyone who doesn’t go at least once a year could be fined CHF 500.-.

  2. That article is wrongly phrased and makes a bigger thing out of it than it actually is.

Swiss men that turn 18 have to attend an information day about military and civil defense. The Canton is extending this to women and „foreigners“ that live here for a long time (If I understand correctly, who live here normally/permanently).

That is it. That is the whole thing.

No, not EVERY citizen needs to go. No not people at age 50 need to go. This is purely false phrasing.

They expect between 3‘800 to 4‘000 people per year. The canton has a population of over 700‘000 citizens.

Personally I think it’s not bad that everyone needs to attend this information. We had lots of bigger floods in Aargau and too few civil defense people that are here to help. We need more people!

  3. Whats funny to me is that the picture is a joint exercise of the two basels. I actually recognise some of the guys there too

  4. What bullshit. As foreigner, you don’t have any citizen’s rights but now should perform citizen’s duties + the newspaper comments on this one being full of “those lazy foreigners who also somehow took our jobs deserve this” messages really give this a great taste. Also this isn’t even being counted as work time unlike other obligatory appointments like the military ones AND there are plans to extend this to nursing, lol.

Guess I will just bring a book and listen to music (will they fine people who don’t pay attention?), but will definitely not contribute to civil defense after this.
