Apple Mapings cars. Seen near Olten recently. They have Apple written large and both numberplates have “Mac” on them! 😀

  1. Some context:
    I’ve noticed that Apple are now using cars near my area (Olten) similar to the Google Streetview ones to build up their mapping database. I spotted two different cars doing this on two separate occasions last week.

    What made me look twice was the fact that they have “Apple” signwritten on them and their numberplates both include “MAC” 😀

  3. I saw one of these last month in Laufen. I didn’t see the number plate, but I noticed the giant camera hardware mounted on the roof.

  9. This is part of Apple Maps Expansion program – they recently launched in Italy after upgrades to US, UK & Ireland, Canada, Spain & Portugal.

    At Apple’s WWDC 21 conference, Italy & Australia were announced as the next countries to get updated Apple Maps data. So Australia will be next ..

    **Note:** I saw the same Apple Maps cars driving around Sydney when I visited there in January 2020.

    So it takes a while for Apple to process all the collected data .. maybe we’ll see an update in late 2022 or 2023 .. maybe France, Germany, Austria, Benelux or Scandinavia will come first ..

    (Or maybe – since Apple recently opened a research centre in Zürich specialising in AI activities – and the iOS market share is strong here – Switzerland will jump the queue ??)

    p.s. I also saw an Apple Maps car recently in Sion .. so it seems they are out in force !

  21. Saw them 3 weeks ago in Zurich. The whole fleet was on the parking lot of the hotel next to our office.
