COP27 leert ons dat er een veel groter probleem is dan vluchtelingen opvangen – al heeft het er misschien mee te maken. Over afzienbare tijd weet niemand nog waar te kruipen voor de grillen van het klimaat. Dat er in Europa (en in de VS net zo goed) vluchtelingen aan de deur staan te dringen heeft te maken met de houding en de hebzucht van de top van het kapitalisme dat zich al generaties verrijkt op de kap van arme landen en van de gewone man in onze landen, terwijl zij ondertussen ook de hefboom bedienen van de opwarming

Ik hoorde deze ochtend op de radio (denk ik) dat er deze winter een aantal duizend mensen op straat zullen slapen (daklozen, oekraiense vluchtelingen, andere asielzoekers…). Dat zou natuurlijk niet mogen want dat is onmenselijk. Het probleem is dat we nu al plek tekort hebben. Het lijkt mij heel onwaarschijnlijk dat wij op korte termijn duizenden plaatsen gaan kunnen creëren. Dit is niet iets wat we met de gewone oplapmaatregelen kunnen verhelpen.
Maw: Er gaan mensen op straat achterblijven. Dit weekend gaat het voor de eerste keer vriezen. Ik verwacht dus een paniekreactie in de pers.

Let’s say every single Belgian town and city has a big enough dedicated appartment block/empty building with enough staff, money and material. Let’s say i wave my little magic wand and poof, those are there tomorrow. We’d be set for years to come. But after those years, they would be full too and the incoming stream would not cease so we’re back to square one. No?
Or am i oversimplifying?
Correct, more things have to change.. there is a reason why they pick Belgium and not Denmark/ Sweden..
Ik ben ook dakloos. Ik vind ook geen plaats om te wonen. Als ze zelf de born and raised Belgians niet kunnen helpen…
Belgium has 2.2 asylum requests per 1000 inhabitants, Germany 2.3, France 1.8, Spain 1.4, Italy 0.8… Austria 4.3 and Greece 2.7. Portugal has 2.7, Hungary 0.004. You could calculate other countries based on the source data, but belgium is one of the most requested countries from asylum seekers. The amount of requests in Greece can be explained geographically, and Hungary sends its immigrants by train to Austria…
If the numbers of 2022 follow the same trend, then it is, at this point, not immediately Belgium’s turn to aid in the EUs asylum program. As far as I understand it, you should request asylum at the outside border of the EU, and I do not think that all the requests in belgium are the exclusive result of people arriving here by plane.
Kunnen we deze miserie niet Europees regelen? Houdt de mensen tegen aan de Europese grens en als ze binnen mogen krijgen ze een plaats. Dat is zo over heel de wereld, behalve in Europa
Step 1: get a european program going that houses all newcomers in a mini city with temprary housing. While staying there make them responsible for maintenance and cooking for all.
step 2: interview to see what their original skills were. And send to countries looking for said skill after educating them in the target language, customs and bringing their skills up to level. Those that don’t have a specific skill can be taught one.
It’ll cost money but one would expect skilled people to be a profit
As climate change worsens, more and more refugees will come. Once large parts of Africa become uninhabitable for human settlement, those people will need a place to go.
The Syrian refugee crisis was caused by the Syrian civil war that broke out in 2011. 3 years before that, Syria experienced historic droughts which caused food prices to skyrocket and millions of people moved from the countryside to the cities. The political instability this caused led to the attempted revolution in 2011 and the following civil war.
This will happen again. And more and more often.

Why do they go to Belgium instead of any of the other dozen safe countries earlier? Germany, Poland, Italy, France, Spain,…
