Musa Okwonga: Why this World Cup feels so wrong

  1. Probably because it’s being held at a weird time of year. And it’ll be in an odd timezone, and oh yeah, the slave labour and human rights abuses.

  2. Most people weren’t too bothered when the World Cup went to Russia under Putin in 2018, or Brazil in 2014 under Rouseff who was involved in organised crime and who had some journalists literally thrown into the sea from planes and murdered.

One way to affect change is to engage with the government and work with it.

  3. “I must continue to ask, for example, why David Beckham – such a proud advocate for LGBT rights earlier in his career – has nothing to say publicly about this subject in the context of Qatar now that he is an ambassador for this tournament.”

Because he’s obsessed with money. This is the same David Beckham who angrily demanded over 6,000 from UNICEF–a charity–for a business class flight. He’s a tosser, but good at hiding it.

  4. It should be why football feels so wrong

While our teachers, nurses, firemen, even doctors are getting paid minimal, kids who play a ball game earns million.

Football allow our people to run away from the reality, forget the pain caused by the society and just yell, scream and be submerge in passion and anger among others. It gives people an excuse to get drunk, to fight, to finally having something that they can feel proud of, can feel passionate about instead of being a zombie working just to pay the bills.

Government likes you to focus on football and other sort of entertainment as well, its the same for you to but dog toy for your dog, so that it doesnt nag you all the time for a walk.

Enjoy the world cup, my friends, while the big corp and ruling class are watching you like watching a cockfight in a third world country.

  5. All people who think it was ok that Russia and Qatar [paid](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jun/18/michel-platini-arrested-over-award-of-2022-world-cup-to-qatar) Platini to get World Championship given to their countries, should just get ready for forced vaginal [examinations](https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/oct/21/australian-women-sue-qatar-airways-over-forced-examinations-at-doha-airport) at Doha airport..

Sigh.. waiting for some Qatari minister to claim racial abuse card..

  6. Well yeah, it should feel wrong – it’s being held in a backwards theocracy in stadiums that were built by literal slaves.

  7. Japan’s proposal to FIFA involved broadcasting matches using hologram technology onto football pitches around the world. Can you imagine going to Wembley and seeing a match happening live in Tokyo projected onto the pitch?

  8. I’m just one person, but fuck this. I’m not watching. I wish our players all the best, and not going to call for them to boycott because I understand they’ve worked really hard to get there and for some it may be their last chance to play for their country.

    But I ain’t watching.
