Fears for safety of 50 asylum-seekers after protesters attacked centre

  1. A lot of these attacks are instigated by videos of Asylum seekers spread by right wing twitter accounts.

And these videos are getting a lot of traction online.

  2. ‘ There were plans to move 220 single men quickly into the temporary centre, which had cubicles for people to sleep in. ‘

In what world are single work able men considered asylum seekers and in what world is the reason we take them in?

  3. I was watching BBC news a couple of weeks ago and it was the main story that Albanian gangs were sending people over to the UK via the channel to run the drugs trade. They had people undercover get in contact with the Albanians and they were told crossing the channel is risk free, the only ones who get sent back are the ones who don’t claim asylum.

You can be sure it’s happening in Ireland too yet would RTE news ever lead with a story like that?

This is the story and they lead with this on BBC news on tv.

  4. Perhaps, if the authorities had an open meeting with the community before the people are brought in and explain when and why they are being housed , it might have helped.
Also casual meet and greet events between the locals and the new arrivals might also help each side to understand eachother.
Fear whether real or imagined can make people unpredictable.

  5. All of Europe are tired of asylum seekers. For the Muslim ones, here are some interesting facts:

The UAE and Saudi Arabia have an official policy of never accepting refugees. Instead they donate money to refugees via NGO’s and the UN, but they do not want them entering their countries. Saudi Arabia donated money to Germany to build 200 mosques for Syrian refugees there, yet won’t let one refugee set foot in its country!

In 2021, Sweden took in 27k Syrian refugees, while oil rich Qatar accepted just 190 individuals! And I’m guessing that’s because they were wealthy and bringing in money, or had connections to someone in high places in Qatar.

Why are Europe expected to take all these people, when the wealthiest countries in the Middle East won’t?

  6. What the fuck is wrong with these morons? This is the kind of abhorrent behaviour we associate with the worst of arseholes in Britain.

  7. The more “asylum-seekers” that come, the more Irish homeless there will be.

Why is the government doing this both to the Asylum-seekers and Irish people alike?

We all need to point at the government, together, as brothers, both asylum seekers and Irish for being put in to this position by lies peddled by the Irish government, and us, the Irish citizens, and put our foot down.

Use legal channels, organize. Get rid of this malicious tyrants that hate us.

  8. This is precisely the reaction the government wanted to see to the flood of refugees: The far-right co-opting causes that should be led by an economically-left-leaning movement.

Policies which are an attack on workers and refugees alike – which should breed unity/cooperation among both refugees/workers to force the government to provide jobs/accomodation for all – is now promoting Divide-And-Rule disunity and infighting, with opponents of government policy dismissible as racist hicks.

Remember that corporatist parties _love the far right_, even while pretending to oppose them – because their biggest enemy, are those who are economically-left.

It’s exactly what happened politically around the world, 100 years ago with mainstream parties/elites fostering the rise of the far-right and fascism, while engaging in greater and greater attacks against workers – politically damaging (and personally enriching) policies that they prefer to see the far-right benefit from, rather than the economically-left.

As someone who is living with 4 hubs within a 4km radius of my home I can see both sides. The hub areý not appropriate housing. Conditions must be dire, no privacy, no facilities etc I can empathise with them and also be unhappy about the impact of tgat influx on my community and my life. I can feel sorry for their plight and also unhappy about their presence it is not mutually exclusive. As for engaging through the correct channels guards, councils etc. That requires time and that consultation should have happened before they were moved in much like planning permission. A community meeting was held last night all local politicians invited and 1 showed up. Meanwhile we are living with the antisocial behaviour.

It’s very easy to throw around the racism card but it shuts down meaningful conversation and makes people defensive I can be unhappy about a hub on my doorstep and not be a racist. Get off your moral high horse, take your head out of your naive ass and realise that 200 + unemployed men of any race housed in disgusting conditions will lead to antisocial behaviour and noone would want that on their doorstep

  10. For me, as a father of 4 girls, my concern is that they are all men living in these places, why are we taking so many single males into this country?

  11. I’m all for helping these people but the country is quite literally full, we don’t have the resources, and it’s completely unacceptable that we’re providing shelter for foreign nationals over our own citizens on the street, and last time I checked Georgia and Pakistan (where a lot of the non Ukrainian migrants are coming from) aren’t even at war, many Russians are even fleeing to Georgia right now

  12. It seems to me that the people making these decisions, live nowhere near any of these provision centres, temporary or otherwise. Lets just ship them off to working class neighbourhoods or off the some rural town, without any prior local consultation with residents. No forward planning on getting these people integrated, housed, educated or employed……………sure we’re a great little country.

  13. I am absolutely pro Ukrainian refugees and those from other war torn countries. But Albanians and Nigerians are often among the largest groups claiming asylum. A system under pressure cannot function and cannot support genuine refugees when it is responsible for chancers.

And tbh, as a woman and a lesbian I am worried about the immigration of people from places and cultures with negative attitudes and a lack of rights for women and gay people. Our rights were hard fought and I don’t want to backslide. I know all religions are sexist and homophobic but some adherents act on their hate more

  14. There’s fears for the people of Wicklow town after the residents of the direct provision decided to batter each other out in the streets, men trying to work and elderly going about their business having to turn back because of their behavior and that’s not including the carry on of them in the bars trying to drug women and robbing every shop in the town , absolutely disgusting and what we are expected to tolerate because of our sick government
