Found this in our bathroom. Is this a common design in Finland?

  1. Never seen behing a pipe but it probably does not matter if its slightly open and drains air.

Though its hard to clean if needed and you cant remove it….

  2. You need to clean those air vents every couple years, and depending how old that bathroom is, it may have not been cleaned in years and airflow is insufficient. If i owned apartment like that i would like it fixed soon as possible.

Of course it depends how close that water pipe is to the vent, and can you unscrew it completely for cleaning.

  3. These are for ventilation and they are usually in the ceiling. You should also clean them yearly by removing it (you just screw the whole base) but it is not possible like this. This is most likely left there after a renovation and is located now in an extremely crappy place.

  4. The apartment has almost certainly had new water pipes installed, and the shower has not originally been located there. Vent is at the original location, it’s not rare for vents to be in wall (outside wall).

  5. Well yes but not there. Usually they are, yes on the wall, and at the top. There’s a few inches till the ceiling. In saunas and washrooms, ventilation

  6. It’s not common, but that might be the result of the competition being taken to the extreme, the cheapest possible builder is chosen and with the lowest possible costs. The result is what is ordered, cheap and bad, when the builders may not even have training in the field.

Maybe it has even been the last job on Friday when the workers employed on slave wages are in a hurry to spend the weekend, or the first work order on Monday when they return from the weekend more/less tired to hear from the angry boss how the job needs to be finished immediately with no questions asked.

  7. For some reason the concept of exhaust fans in bathrooms doesn’t seem to be understood in Finland.Would be nice to get rid of the smell after taking a dump and have clear mirrors after showering.
