So at least one bar has decided to not support tge multinational beer price increases: https://linksharing.samsungcloud.com/ceSDBdg6yYLU
We have loads of new small breweries that have started up over the past few years – should we perhaps focus more on these? Irish drinkers are quite fond of our connection to Guinness but with Diageo being a huge conglomerate, maybe it’s time to help the up and coming microbreweries with their different brews.
That link refers to their local breweries and, since I’m in Louth, Jumping Church is my local nectar. You have a brewery close to you too.
I think that anyone who has the wherewithal to start a brewery and compete in this market should be encouraged over multinational price-increasers.

My problem with basically every small brewer beer I’ve tried is the taste is too strong, I usually drink Heineken, peroni, moretti etc. I’m no beer expert but I’m guessing that it’s the hoppy taste I don’t like?
One example was I had a helles style beer in Dublin airport which I wasn’t massively fond of. I flew to Berlin and had some local helles beer which was lovely and not strong tasting.
Do you know of any lighters local beers that would be more suited to my taste?
A problem with a lot of the smaller breweries is that if they get any degree of success it’s almost certain one of the big beer companies will buy them out. For example five lamps is owned by c&c and Franciscan Well is owned by Molson Coors.
So basically you have to be careful when drinking beers from what look like small independent breweries because they might not be.
I can’t hack IPA at all. Fruity citrus beer makes me sick (literally) end up with a bad experience generally
I’m a Heineken drinker but switched to Tiger when I saw it there recently. Massive profits and a second price increase before Christmas and the World Cup, they can go feck themselves
Happy to support local brewers but when I drank Heineken I could literally get it anywhere. It’d kinda annoy me to have a favourite I could only get in my local, having to find a beer I like when I’m out with friends doesn’t appeal to me…. But thinking it’s a great idea to support more local breweries, if done right could spark a much needed revival in the pub industry
Not a hardcore communist or anything but imagine if we actually had a nationalised stout company where workers are well paid and profits go into state/charitable orgs.
I hate how much support and marketing Diageo gets for free from the Irish public and Irish identity abroad.
Be nice to do some good instead of lining the coffers of some multinational company plus youd have a reason to feel good about yourself when you blow 100 on the sauce.
Most craft lagers and stouts ive tried arent great, theyre also more expensive anyway. I can get 10 moretti cans for 16, hard to beat that
My local has stopped serving Heineken and has weekly specials now. The bar man asked me to name three beers I like, gave me a shot sized amount to try one he recommended and I went with that. Now I make a point to go to that bar and enjoy the variety.
Like the other comment said, I think I liked the ease of knowing I could order Heineken anywhere and it was predictably comforting, but in reality I think I now prefer the surprise of something slightly different each time. And who are we kidding, beer does all taste relatively similar. But some craft beers do give me a hangover. I wish more pubs would have river rye, that’s a great Irish brand and quite pure in terms of not so many sulphites that the head is banging the next day.
I support galway bay brewery, its served in a local pub I like.
Like a lot of commenters here, not super fond of the IPA. They have lagers tho that are class
Its a nice bit more expensive tho, its a pity the local smaller beers arent cheaper. But i guess its hard to produce for cheap
My 2c
There is nothing worse on a night out spending money trying to figure out something you like and only figuring it out on your 4th beer…..
Agreed. There are some lovely local brewers. For me it’s Wicklow wolf and some of their beers are fantastic (their kölsch especially). We just need to get the pubs to drop the last remnants of the “craft beer revolution”, get rid of all those stupidily hoppy ipas and replace them with some of better beers from around Ireland
My problem with the popular lagers is that they are so weak. If I’m going to fork out €5-6 for a single drink then I want something I can savour and that packs a punch. Minimum 5% but ideally 6% and above. It’s such a rip off to pay so much for some watery 4-4.3% muck.
