Another big multinational fund manipulating the market, Five Star International. Take for instance, Dingle. There are only TWO long term property rentals listed on Daft. But there are ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-FOUR short term lets, all associated with Five Star International.
See for yourselves:

That’s fucking shocking why don’t we have any fucking control over air bnb
It’s sickening to think that our government is aware of this carry-on and turns a blind eye. Even during a housing crisis. I can only imagine how much companies like these are manipulating large markets like in Dublin.
This happens in every tourist town. Clonakilty is just as bad for it for years.
Here lies the real problem.
We can build all the homes we want, but when investment funds hoover them all up it will solve nothing. They have complete control over market prices and will continue to do so until we get control over it.
The only way out is for the government enforce extreme new regulations and taxes. Sadly this will never happen though.
I like Dingle, but it’s a tourist town. Without the tourists, nobody would want to live there anyway, which is the real tension at work in these areas.
As a kid, lots of those houses were being rented out to tourists too anyway.
FUCKING WOW.
Its only going to get worse until this government stops turning a blind eye. Absolute wankers.
Rabble rabble rabble.
Ok. Let’s look at this.
Your smoking gun is that there is a company that’s entire model is to help rent properties in tourist areas… Is actually trying to rent out property in tourist areas??
It’s a disgrace joe!
You know that Five Star International is basically just an upmarket AirBnb right?
It doesn’t own any of these properties.
The owners of the properties register them with the agency, then the agency advertises them for holiday homes all over the world.
It’s also advertising these to Americans on other websites.
What’s the problem here?
Do you not like people being able to rent out their property to an international market?
Do you not like people being able to have control over their property?
All taxes are paid, the houses aren’t set up for long term rentals. They’re specifically investment properties for holiday rentals.
Also, they’re generally in areas that are specifically aimed at tourists.
Five Star International does not own these houses. They are all holiday rentals in a location whose industry is tourism. Also, look at the locations for most of them which are in the back and beyond of the peninsula and hardly suitable for long-term living for most people.
Talk about cherry picking. It’s a tourist spot. Of course there’s going to be tons more short term rentals.
Yup. Drive around coastal towns in winter and there’s empty houses everywhere. It’s just wrong.
Property development companies which will build and supply to meet market forces, not housing or accommodation requirements mean the rents will remain as high as they currently are.
Its the opposite to FFG party policies, but we need state led building schemes. They can have allot of cost savings that are only applicable to state led building schemes, meaning houses can be built for far less if done directly by state build scheme.
I’d argue anywhere where the planning permission permits building for local needs only should automatically ban short term (less than 12 month) lets. It’s entirely unreasonable to deny someone the right to build somewhere they want to live while allowing existing residents let their property to tourists.
‘it’s the market.. nothing we can do.. there is more 3bed semis being build in the pipeline … there is no housing crisis .. we’re better then other countries etc. etc., one person’s rent is another person’s income’ 🙁
Because corpo pretends to be innocent and a part of society? These pseudo-nations can be hostile and can do harm.
7 houses to rent in Ennis and surrounding area on Daft, all listed with rent per week. 316 Entire Houses listed on Airbnb for same region more or less. One house listed on Airbnb in my estate is €430 a ~~week~~ night. There used to be a family living in it. They moved out this time last year. I’ve only ever seen 2 different groups of people at the house since.
Air b and b.
5 Star is an agency representing owners.
Would you blame landlords for putting their rental units up on Airbnb when the rental regulations are all geared towards the tenants. Imagine having to wait up to two years to evict a tenant who doesn’t pay rent and thrashes the place up in the meantime… Hell I would put my place up on Airbnb too rather than put up with that scenario.
I’ve been thinking; why can’t we tax corporate ownership of rental properties like this in order to facilitate funding for housing schemes in ireland?
This would disincentivize this kind of monopolistic corporate price hiking and could benefit the government aswell as they could easily line their pockets with the extra cash..?
Or is our extremely wealthy economy reliant on companies like this aswell?
Someone please enlighten me!
I hear they killed Fungy too
My brother was looking for accom near cork city for work and it took 2 months after starting the new job to actually get a place.
Most places don’t even respond to applications and one even told him that he was 1 out of 350 applications they had to process for a pretty low quality, heavily overpriced property.
So you take Dingle, one of the biggest tourism spots in Ireland, to make a point about short term rentals. Suggesting they are owned by a vulture fund multinational corporation. And then show a list of prime location properties looking over harbours and piers in this tourism hotspot.
Like there’s a way to make a point about housing here but this is just dumb.
If the Land league existed today air bnbs would be burned to the ground and nobody would dare get involved with them.
Make it easier to build apartment blocks.
Its ridiculous the amount of houses vs apartments.
Let people build a house the way they want it to look and not like some old depressing brick style.
Next lower tax for PRIVATE landlords and increase tax for LTDs owning houses.
I’m a renter in the look out at the moment and its crazy but their property is their property , if they want to keep it empty or keep their horses inside its within their rights . If you don’t want them to keep it empty give them incentives instead of punishing emptiness rewards fullness.
Because Ireland is a neoliberal paradise run by tax cheating megacorps.
Why there are no homes to rent?
You need **landlords** to have **rentals**
We have run them all out of town through government policy and the publics demonisation.
Now we act surprised that there are no rentals 🙂
Population increased by 10% in the last five years. There’s been lots of inward migration to take up job opportunities that are here. We haven’t built new houses as quickly as we should have to keep pace with the population increase.
Same in my seaside village in the south east. I fear that this is more greed of individuals who are just renting through these agencies. Individuals think it’s awful until they think of how much money they can make from a rental and then their moral boundary moves. I know plenty who will complain that their kids can’t find a place to live but also have and investment property somewhere else. They are completely oblivious that they are part of the problem.
It took me a MONTH living in a hotel trying to find a place.
Now i found something with 3 other people. But it shouldn’t have taken that long to begin with..
People giving out shite and yes it’s multinationals but it’s also home owners and landlords choosing short term rentals rather than long term.
Not sure what the solution is. Short term lets are required and a good alternative to hotels but clearly the problem is that they are too lucrative
Nooooooo it’s the asylum seekers!!!!!! /s
A 4 story building with retail units was built back in celtic tiger days. The majority of apartments above weren’t finished, very few were in fact. During the summer they were finished up quite quickly, then listed on a website as a “hotel” or short term let. I believe they’re used to house Ukrainians now.
Not to disparage anybody seeking refuge but as someone with limited rental property around here it’s kinda frustrating.
Who needs to rent a home in the middle of nowhere for a longterm?
Donegal is rife with this shit. Ruins towns/communities
Truth. Myself and 4 others were in apartments in a small coastal town and life was good until last year when a vulture fund bought it out and kicked us all out. Basically they broke the law but court costs are high and they would just keep taking us to court until we ran out of money, threshold told them exactly which laws they were breaking but they basically said yep we are doing it anyway so get a solicitor and see you there. We didn’t have that sort of money so we agreed to move out. They turned around and sold it empty for 3x what they paid, and guess what it is now- short term rental. Market had meanwhile got so expensive that we could not afford anything in the area near job family and friends. Ridiculously greedy bastards. Do not care if you are on the streets all about their piracy.
All air bnbs and holiday homes. Should be crucified with tax for vacant homes
It’s high time the government banned airbbnb and the likes in this country, but they won’t as they’ve all got a vested interest.
Rented a loft apartment in the centre of town off a mate last June for 1500. It is now on air bnb for 11,700e for the month of May 2023 and 7k per month for months earlier in the year.
Bringing in refugees and charging them €20 a week for rent is going to help. So glad those in the Irish government al have an IQ of 40000000
