> Transport Infrastructure Ireland said revenue is used for purposes including motorway maintenance, **toll collection and operations**, and for the maintenance of the wider national road network.
I guess the roads and automated toll charging must be getting more expensive to already exist.
Think about it though, a toll booth machine is probably earning a better wage than many people on minimum wage.
Well of course they are.
Anything we can’t be gouged on?
Will opt for the non toll scenic route the odd time now so.
I also have to say that the toll on the m4 is still being operated mostly unattended. There was way more staff pre covid and they obviously couldn’t have them during covid and never brought them back.
The price hikes are linked to the current rate of inflation, which has increased by 8.6% between August 2021 and August 2022.
The tolls cannot be increased beyond this rate.
….
For tag users, they will rise from €2.10 to €2.30, while those captured on video will rise from €2.70 to €2.90.
The toll for unregistered cars will increase by 30 cent from €3.20 to €3.50.
….
€2.10 + 8.6% = €2.28
€3.20 + 8.6% = €3.47
Nice bit of rounding going in there
I’m sure the train frequencies will also be increased to “maximum level”, NOT.
Shame we never contributed a cent of tax money to these roads, we wouldn’t need to keep being taxed to use them. We should have a new tax, call it…I dunno, Road Tax or something?
Am I missing something? The toll booths are increasing automated on the M1. I rarely see staff in the booths. This hike isn’t going to their wage.
The maintenance is pretty poor as it is, some of the signs needed replaced 5 years ago nevermind now.
It couldn’t be that the investors/operators aren’t getting the same return in real terms they expected and are hiking for the craic.
You gotta pay the toll troll to get in
If only the irish had the balls to all remove their number plates in protest against this absolute shit hole of a government.
The beatings will continue, until morale improves.
The Nightman: Here’s your toll, troll!
The Troll: Your boy awaits!
The Nightman: At last the boy’s soul is mine!
Hope my weekly income go up 8,6 percent as well
Understandable. Last time I went down the M1 the barriers were having trouble making ends meet.
Ye guys keep voting FFG 👍
An article in the Irish Times today says that the m50 makes ~€140 million/year on average over the last 10 years.. and yet they are increasing the tolls.
How is it possible that they can’t maintain the m50 for 140 million a year?
What’s important is that all the toll operators get 8.6% pay increases because due to inflation they are now working 8.6% harder.
But the goverment promised the m50 would be free once it was paid off in tolls.
“Fares cannot be increased beyond this”
February 2023 headline :
“Government asked to consider a further price hike on road tolls”
March 2023 headline:
“Road toll price increase approved. Can’t go beyond this, until it’s allowed to”
Fake plates time…or lots of dirt
Good. We need more tolls.
Wasn’t the tolls supposed to recoup the cost of the road and then cease? Isn’t that what was said? A bit like the USC.
Is there any other toll roads designed like ours, no matter where you join the motorway you pay the same price?
It seems very unfair to people living around the Drogheda area for example, having to pay the same price as someone coming from anywhere north of the toll bridge to dublin.
Any other European motorway I’ve been on (most paid for with the same European grants)(oh and also now free like most of Spain) your car is registered joining and then depending where you leave you pay a toll, based on the distance you used.
So basically people pay the same toll amount here if they travel from Newry to Dublin as someone going from the Northside of Drogheda to the southside of Drogheda.
Only mentioning Drogheda because it’s an area i know.
Is there/ was there a reason for designing it this way?
Well tolly god
Can anyone tell me who owns the M50 toll or the Port tunnel.
Having driven around France quite a bit over the summer…. Our tolling system is an absolutely minimal delight compared to those fuckers. Jaysus the costs.
We barely have any tolls in the country. Think we should probably have a few more tbh. Not going to private companies, but just to fund the cost of the road network. Not sure massively polluting infrastructures like the Limerick-Cork road, or the Galway ringroad, as necessary as they might be, should be coming from the public purse.
ITT so many people who feel entitled to hugely expensive infrastructure for no charge. Unlike water, not everyone has to use motorways, so someone has to pay.
Love the way they went straight to the maximum , sure why not.
Blazing Saddles started this toll crap.
Highway robbery
Nothing ever comes down though, ever.
Yaaaay more Government mandated theft.
Everything going up except peoples wages
Can someone genuinely explain why these exist at all? Why does road tax not pay for the roads we drive on??
So, they are just raising the price because they can, right? Just because the increase is linked to inflation, which is high, they rise it to hell. Its not compulsory to rise it that high, but they do it just because they can.
Nice one!
I fucking hate this.

Still can’t get over the fact that there’s driving on the motorway is tolled, but driving into the city center is free.

You gotta laugh at this one:
