In fact, that’s not as foolish as it might seem to a city-dwellers eye.
Keeping the bear away using human voice is the recommended protocol in Finland. (These are brown bears, not grizzlies)
And as the guy made the mistake of leaving his trash out on the porch, after that there were two possible scenarios for this particular learning experience for the bear:
1. ”Yum. Good eatin there.”
2 ”Couldn’t eat. Interrupted by scary thing”
If you’re living in the wilderness area, better keep the (1) at a minimum.
Obviously, it turns a bit risky when he can’t get his dog in, but you’ll notice that he keeps his retreat indoors pretty short, even when he takes some risk while retrieving his dog.
The real advice in similar situation would be: 1) have a retreat handy and 2) pay close attention to the bear. If human voice does not scare it, then retreat. (Next stage of escalation in such a case is actually calling the hunters to take care if a ”nuisance bear” (bit more complicated than that, paperwork, applications etc. but that’s the gist of it from the point of view of escalation of force. )
