One in six Britons have switched their main supermarket because of the cost of living

  1. Get my fruit and veg at Sainsbury’s everything else is between Aldi and Lidl, most people in my social circle have the same habits.

  2. My problem with aldi and lidl is yes they are cheap but theres also a lot of extra crap ingredients involved.

I go to aldlidl for cleaning supplies some tins and stuff.

Also my partner is coeliac and aldi/lidl are pretty poor for chucking wheat in everything.

  3. I might be way off base but I can see Tesco getting into trouble and maybe closing a few stores in the near future. I struggle to see what their direction is.

They are no longer a ‘cheap’ supermarket. I don’t see them being much if at all cheaper than Sainsbury for basics. I feel like Asda has more appeal as a cheaper family store, and then obvs Lidl and Aldi. But Tesco don’t have the ‘luxury’ appeal of Sainsbury or the ‘traditional British’ marketing of Morrisons. The ‘Clubcard prices’ are just normal prices, with the non Clubcard ones being inflated.

Further their petrol stations around me are now the same or more expensive than the one of stations like Esso Texaco Merco that used to be way more.

  4. I’m having to stick to delivery as without a car shopping at a major supermaket is just a massive hassle getting everything home especially in winter.

Just stick to Lidl if I need any extra bits but I would switch completely if they started offering delivery.

  5. I’m pretty stuck with going to Sainsbury’s since they have a good gluten free section for my coeliac disease. Otherwise I’d be in Lidl mainly.

  6. I buy all fruits and vegs in my local street market. A whole bowl of tomatoes, bananas, pears, or stuff like that costs from 50 to 1,50 pounds. Local fishmongers are also cheaper than supermarkets and their stock is much fresher.

  7. Changed to Aldi 2 years ago when I moved purely because it was closer.

Quality is great and the prices are decent too.
A lot of their own brand stuff is superior to similar branded bits e.g. their chocolate hobnobs, beans, bread and chocolate buttons to name a few.

  8. We switched from Tesco to Sainsbury’s just because Tesco are dicks and this clubcard stuff pissed me off.

Sainsbury’s seem to treat their staff better and a plus side seems to be that the meat and fruit and veg is better. Don’t mind paying extra for that.

Genuinely feel like Sainsbury’s is better value for me as I had to throw half my last Tesco shop in the bin, never seen so many rotten onions.

  9. Once we all know the worst culprit then we should refuse to use them forever. Show the other supermarkets that this is where greed will get you. This is still in line with capitalism. Your brand proved to be a bunch of A-Holes so we the consumers refuse to use you.

  10. I tried switching but the quility change is not much worth it and the oppressive nature of the store layout of aldi just makes me uncomfortable.

We’ve actually noticed a saving using the butcher and fish market though rather than the supermarkets and the food quility is smashing! I know that’s not an option for all though, perks of living in a rural harbour town.

  11. I went to Iceland’s the other day for the first time in years in what I thought would be a good attempt at saving money on groceries. It was actually more expensive than shopping pretty much anywhere else.

  12. I’ll be visiting UK for 6 weeks this December onwards. Which supermarket would have the best bang for the bucks, i.e. good quality products for decent value?

  13. I’ve actually switched up a level to Sainsburys and Waitrose because the prices aren’t actually that different now and the quality is higher.

Note: I don’t drive (yet) and it’s a ridiculous mission to get to the nearest Aldi or Lidl without public transport. I value my time and it’s just a single bus ride to the supermarkets I mentioned. Once I have a car I’m going to try Aldi, Lidl and Costco to see how that compares.

  14. Main shop is done in Aldi and then anything I can’t get (mainly vegetarian/vegan alternatives) are picked up in others.

To be honest, with all of them competing with price matching against Aldi/Lidl (£/kg), they’re all pretty much the same when shopping own/basic label.

  15. If you have a local fruit & veg grocers you should make a effort and visit for all things veg. You can get much better quality produce and at a better price for a quantity you need

  16. Convenience is the problem. Aldi and Lidl are rammed here and hard to get around quickly and it eats into the weekend of a crazy work schedule week.

Lidl quality has also nosedived. Shopped there for several years for the top ups. Don’t bother now. That and the rewards system is now worthless or as near as.

Aldi has better selection and stock than Lidl by far.

Asda was getting silly so we’re trying Tesco for now. May end up swapping again or even back depending how it goes.

  17. I have shopped with Asda for 20 years and know the prices well, in some cases items have went up at least 50%. Rip off bastards
