I agree that to understand Austria you need to look into its imperial past to some extent. But surely this can’t be all of it, right? Will you really begin to understand modern Austria by reading books exclusively from the pre-war, in-between the wars, or just-after-the-war years? Any suggestions for a more contemporary list in which “modern Austria” is not just defined via its long-distant past?

I recommend “Austrian Psycho”
If you want a somewhat lighthearted take on Austria try “6 Österreicher unter den ersten 5” (6 Austrians in the top 5). It is the autobiographic story of German comedian Dirk Stermann moving to Vienna and learning to ungermanify and austrify himself. It delves quite a bit into modern Austrian mythology.
