I’m a football manager 2023 player in england and I’ll be doing a slovakia build a nation challenge starting in the 2nd tier with FC Kosice. I’m hoping to make them the dominant force of Slovak football and a powerhouse in Europe. I’m looking for any information about the Slovakian league.

  1. Hey mate, fellow FM player, although haven’t played in Slovakia for a while.

The league itself isn’t that hard, with Košice you should be able to get promoted straightaway and honestly wouldn’t be surprised if you managed to get European football in your first season in the top division (Fortuna Liga).

Your main competition at the top should be my team, Slovan Bratislava, they have won 4 titles in a row and made it to EL/ECL groups in the last 3 out of the 4 seasons, so they are definitely the richest club in the league and the team to beat.

In Fortuna Liga there is a limit on how many players outside of EU you can play (think it was 5 in playing 11 and 8 in total match squad, but check the rules just in case).

With the UEFA competitions changing format in 24/25 I believe, it should be easier to get to the groups (I’m currently in 29/30 season and I’ve seen more Slovak teams in Europe than previously), but once you can win the league and get to the UCL, you are most likely set to dominate, as you will all of a sudden have more money than anyone in the league (maybe except for Slovan, if they can get to UCL before that as well).

As for the finances, Slovak teams are definitely in worse shape than the neighbouring nations, so it’s gonna be tough getting players from Czechia/Poland/Hungary, as you won’t be able to offer that kind of wages in the first season, until you start playing in Europe regularly. Definitely would look into scouting Balkans, where the wages are much lower, but again, be beware of the non-EU players rule. Although there should be no registration rules, so you can sign as many as you want, you can only play a selected number of them. It gets much easier once Serbia/Bosnia joins EU in the game. I’d be also keeping an eye for young players in Africa, once your scouting allows it (or just check youth teams for free agents and offer them trials).

Since you’re doing build a nation save, once you’ll start winning the league and will be looking to sign some local talent, definitely keep an eye for young players in Žilina/Trenčín/Slovan/DAC, they have the best facilities. Also for some reason in previous years I’ve seen Michalovce produce few solid players, but since our youth rating in game is low, don’t expect many world-beating wonderkids.

Going to be tough with national team, but good luck!
