I saw this star in the sky in Ireland around 7pm and was wondering if anyone could help identify it?, maybe a planet?

  1. That’s probably your street light 😅 no reference from other stars, no direction, this photo is as useful as a cock flavoured lollypop

  2. Most likely Jupiter.

If it’s the most prominent and shiniest star in the sky at the moment in the south east, it’s most definitely the gas giant himself.

  3. Jupiter….. mars is also easily visible tonight and the space station could be easily seen too. Surprised how fast it moved.

SkyView is a superb app for checking them

  4. Jupiter. Biggest planet in the solar system. If you go look towards the right, you will see a dimmer light. That light is Saturn ( the one with the big rings )

  5. Have access to binoculars OP? if you can resolve (focus the image into a single point of solid light) I’ll check myself now I’ve a balcony and can give the basics for OP.

    BRB

Back: south east moving to the south brighter than anything else in the same spot it’s Jupiter.

  6. This photo in itself isn’t a lot of help. There’s no context of any other nearby stars, and we don’t even know which direction we’re looking at.

  7. Download Stellarium, brilliant app just point the phone to the sky and it tells you what you’re looking at.

  8. Probably a planet. I started using an app called Sky Map recently cus I was curious about really bright stars.

Turns out its usually Mars or Jupiter. If you were looking in a West South West direction then it was Jupiter. If East, then it was Mars.

I don’t know if Mercury or Venus have ever been visible since I started using it ( think theyre on the other side of the Sun rn) and I don’t know if Saturn is too far or not to ever be visible.

If anybody knows the answers to the last part please let me know!
