Due to landlords’ exploitation of the shortage they created with the government*
I have a room advertised in Dublin and 90% are foreigners if not more interested in it.
I don’t know why so many foreign students are still coming here. They must be fine with the acommodation situation. PHDs, masters, english language students from Czechia, Poland, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Turkey, India.
I’m getting offered 20% above the advertised rent from foreign students who haven’t even seen the place who are starting next February.
HAP is just a way Leo and his mates can move the money from the governments pocket into their pockets. The worse the housing disaster gets the better for these cunts.
While it is important to remember that successive governments are ultimately responsible for the shortage in supply, never forget that it is the landlords that are doing this.
(Institutional landlords aside) They could choose not to increase their rent, it is probably more than paying any mortgage they have, but they would rather take advantage of people and get theirs.
This is out of control. Dublin, and other “cities” in this country don’t hold a candle to whats listed.
This isn’t the average rent, and that’s a totally disingenuous way to frame the figure. That is the average asking price of new rentals listed on daft.ie. Asking prices on new rentals are going to be much higher than the overall average due to the extreme shortage of available properties. In situ tenants will be paying a lot less than that.
>Daft’s report also included an index of rents paid by sitting tenants, rather than movers, which showed that, on average, rents paid by sitting tenants have increased by 2.5 per cent over the past 12 months.
Interesting that Daft now include stats for existing tenancies. Marginal increases as expected due to rent control.
Jesus!!
Just want to point out if y’all got together and went to squat at the houses of all your politicians. Just move in, they’ll address this problem real quick. Don’t destroy stuff, just move in. Pitch a tent in their front yard, sleep on their couch,If everyone does it, what they going to do arrest the whole country? And if they do arrest you at least you have a place to stay and three meals a day

For reference, the median rent of a 1-bedroom apartment in New York City is $2059 [https://www.apartmentlist.com/rent-report/ny/new-york](https://www.apartmentlist.com/rent-report/ny/new-york)
For Berlin, its averaging €800 [https://www.studying-in-germany.org/cost-of-living-in-germany/](https://www.studying-in-germany.org/cost-of-living-in-germany/)
For various cities in Australia, you’re paying anywhere between $1400-2000 [https://www.gq.com.au/lifestyle/success/this-is-how-much-monthly-income-you-need-to-rent-a-house-in-every-australian-city/image-gallery/1ca242d7cc115508ec29fc3f64e290dd](https://www.gq.com.au/lifestyle/success/this-is-how-much-monthly-income-you-need-to-rent-a-house-in-every-australian-city/image-gallery/1ca242d7cc115508ec29fc3f64e290dd)
