Can anyone tell me what this does? Found just outside Berne in Switzerland – lights up red as a train passes.

  1. Looks quite interesting – Is there anything else nearby? Especially things mounted to the track, signals etc.
    Also could you tell where this is? If you’re really interested, you could try asking asking the railway infrastructure manager, which around Bern could be the SBB, BLS or RBS.

  2. Is there a railway switch in front of it? Could be part of a heating system for railway switch.

  3. Looks like wayside monitoring. Basically fancy cameras that read the wagon identification codes on cargo trains and collect full profile Images of them. They can also have other nice sensors (UHF readers for example).

    A few years ago I heard of a project at SBB to automatically detect the wear level of break pads on cargo train wagons to flag the wagons for service/maintenance. Pretty cool stuff
