Alternative flag of Slovakia based on Demands of the Slovak Nation (Žiadosti slovenského národa) and current flag (more in comments) [OC]

  2. Hello. I’ve made this alternative version of the flag of Slovakia.

    It is based on the Demands of the Slovak Nation from 1848, where the “Slovak flags” were described as red-white (point VIII. of the Demands). The flags from this period most likely also included a swallowtail, as it was very common, but I opted for the more modern and standardized rectangular shape with a 2:3 ratio. I also included the most recent version of the Slovak coat of arms depicting a white double cross and a blue mountain with three peaks made by Ladislav Čisárik and Ladislav Vrtel. I chose to go with a darker and richer color palette which was prevalent in many flags of the 20th century, including inter-war Czechoslovakia.

    I made this flag because of several reasons:

    * this alternative flag is, in my opinion, truer to the history of Slovakia and its people, as it is directly drawn from the first public manifesto of organized Slovaks
    * this flag is less-likely to be confused for the flag of Slovenia, which is a nice bonus.

    All-in-all, it is an amalgam of at least three centuries’ worth of history, I hope you like it. Any comments or criticism are welcome.

  5. I like the history behind it, and the flag doesn’t look bad. My only concern is that our national team colors are heavily blue for all the sports teams and stuff, and having very little blue on the flag might be a bit weird. I know there are some countries whose national team colors are a color that is not even on their flag (the Dutch). I’d just prefer it the other way, that’s all.

  21. Páčia sa mi tie alternatívne vlajky ale som proti zmene vlajky. Prečo? Pretože je podobná s Ruskou? Polovica národov v Európe má trikolóru a idú ju meniť?

  23. I think it look very nice. About the current slovak flag. When me and my ukrainian friends were in Bardejow I realised that when they were seeing the National flag they commonly mistaken it as a way of supporting Russia becouse of the colors
