Some days ago the local salmantino newspaper *Salamanca Hoy* covered the Portuguese approval on the high-speed railway line that would connect Lisboa with Vigo through Porto. This plan also includes the lines of Faro-Huelva-Sevilla, Lisboa-Badajoz-Madrid and Porto/Lisboa-Aveiro-Salamanca-Madrid. The latter would create a direct 3-hour-journey from Iberian Peninsula’s geographical center to Portugal’s third largest city. It would also shorten the way to the sea for some Spanish interior provinces, reducing export costs for lots of industries in Spain and creating high amounts of traffic between our countries. In general, this project promises lots of economic opportunities for both parties.

In my province, Salamanca, the State is funding the electrification of Fuentes de Oñoro-Salamanca section as well as the *Terminal Intermodal Ferroviaria* construction, a logistic project which main objective is working as an exports/imports node from Castillian Mesa to Porto’s and Aveiro’s ports.
Portuguese Government’s main priority is linking Lisboa and Porto with Vigo, then Lisboa-Badajoz-Madrid. Portuguese executive is also pressing Pedro Sánchez to act on this issue. Unfortunatley, works are not expected to be completed until 2030, and some sections up to 2050 due to low funding.
Personally, I’ve been very much looking forward to see this project finished soon since I first heard of it. It would ease the traffic between our territories and give us a shorter way to the ocean. In the last years, I’ve seen a lot of my friends going to your beaches in Aveiro and it would be so much easier for Spaniards near the border to visit you! We would also love you Portuguese visiting us and working here if you had the chance. It’s a shame that our governments are managing so bad the economic situation and not creating job opportunities locally so that the youth don’t have to emigrate.
