Isn’t it all digital now?
Beromünster is long dead
I think of the four supported bands, only FM is sill somewhat active in europe, and it doesn’t go far enough for most of these locations to reacht switzerland 😉 You should be able to pick up some stuff in the FM band. You can check here, for example: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_UKW-H%C3%B6rfunksender_in_der_Schweiz
Radio Beromünster was famously “Musigwälle 531”, and only old people listened to it. It was on 512 Khz MW but they killed it around 2009.
Funny story, I worked in an electronics store at that time. There were a lot of grumpy older people coming in to buy a DAB radio because you could only get “musigwälle” on DAB 😉
Radio Beromünster respectively the “Landessender Beromünster” (named after the location of the radio tower) was the famous Swiss public radio station, starting in 1931.
During 2nd world war it even was of international importance because it reported “independent” information which could also be received in neighboring countries.
The medium wave station started to lose it’s importance in the 60ies when FM radio with better quality became available. Yet it continued to send (under changing names) until 2008.
OK, I have lived abroad since before the Bermünster station shut down. But in my old head, Swiss radio, no matter which station, is still “dä Bäromünschter”. Old habits die hard.
I love the picture of the old tech equipment. Any info on the year or make or even maybe a whole picture of the unit 🙂 ? Reminds of Dieter Rams design for Braun. Just a guess.
Check [this list on Wikipedia of AM stations](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_medium_wave_transmitters) which are still in operation
This brings back memories for me. I remember when I was a child, we had a AM/FM SW MW LW radio. We would just tune in random stations and try to guess what languages we were hearing and try to see what we could understand. A lot of times this would lead to my grandfather talking about listening to the different sides during the war.
Are there still shortwave stations going?
