Oh wow, what a find. What accent is this? It has a lot of French and English loanwords.
Imagine digging with your own hands the compressed remains of decayed ferns and trees which have been underground for 300 million years, hundreds of meters underneath the surface. All those millions of tons of coal digged up in Belgium, fueling our industry, were chopped out by miners like this with a damn hammer and shovel.
These people worked in hot, damp, dusty (hello cancer), dark, loud and unsafe environments for all their lives. Can you imagine? And then people at the office complain because the thermostat was set from 22 to 20 degrees.
Absolutely insane what working conditions they had back then!
I went on to watch another one about the history of these mines, and it said that some people commuted from West- and eastflandres and travelled for 8 hours a day sometimes to do their shift!!
Wow. Fantastic video. Ideal source for ‘guess what this word means’ during a quiz!
