Sinn Féin now the leading party of middle class Ireland

  1. Next election will be an interesting one.

Only natural to see SF slowly rise as FFG are hopelessly unable to deal with the problems facing the country, especially housing which is the dominant issue for younger people. People want something different because what we’ve got obviously isn’t working.

  2. I won’t ever vote for SF but with the way FG and FF have dealt with housing in particular I’m not surprised that people of my generation are willing to.

While things for me definitely could get worse under a SF led government there’s a sizeable contingent of people who are really struggling under massive rents; so why not roll the dice.

A roaring economy means fuck all when c. 50% of your wage goes to your landlord.

  3. The first step on fixing housing issues in Ireland is to start amending planing laws.
To build a road takes 15 years. To build subway … over 30..
mayors objecting to new estate because he wasn’t involved .. way too many obstacles .
    And finally
    The small landlords are disadvantaged.
    I can go on …

  4. No stupid answers please, but why do people hate Sinn Fein so much? I’m in my twenties and have only known FG/FF in power so I’ve never gotten the reason.

  5. The problem I always have with SF is while their words are exactly what I want to hear, they never have anything to back it up. They are all about slashing taxes and increasing public spending. Their financial plan never makes sense. The current government aren’t pumping cash into public services because they are mean.

I’ll vote for SF when they stop being first to critizie other parties plans and the last to suggest alternative solutions that make sense. They just seem like they love to complain but don’t know how to do things better.

  6. The budget before the next election will be a bribe to the electorate by the current government.

FF/FG/G can see the writing on the wall, so why give a SF led government the opportunity to spend anything with the funds built up? Not saying I agree with it, but they can see their combined support at 45% and if they lose the next election, they’ll have to sit in the opposition benches and fight not only SF, but each other.

  7. This is down to 2 factors. First is young people dont remember or care about thr IRA’s atrocities and the second is this government’s abject failure at tackling the cost of living. The only way they can tackle a cost of living issue is by asking business what to do; theyrr terrified of upsetting developers, insurers, banks, lawyers etc.

SF would be a dreadful government in my mind, for all sorts of reasons, but I can 100% understand people’s POV on this

  8. SF’s opposition to new housing has worked wonders for me. Value of my property keeps going up. They really do represent the best interests of the middle class.

  9. I’m voting SF mainly as once they get in, and get nothing done, we can have an adult conversation about politics.

Its fucking annoying mentioning the opposation with Pearl clutches crying about strawmen secret police, “NOt a NorMAl PaRtY” etc

  10. Look all I care about is housing! It’s my sole concern! If they can deliver housing I will vote for them I have my doubts ( I’m a Southern protestant) but Eoin Obrien is my local TD and he seems too be a very intelligent man with some very interesting ideas.

I do worry is this populism but honestly FFG are absolutely useless and so unimaginative. I’m willing too take the gamble if it helps the housing situation.

I’m nearly 30 work a good paying full time job with a good university degree and yet I’m stuck living at home with my parents because I can’t afford to move out. That simply isn’t right if SF can fix this then I will support them!

  11. It’s almost like when we only have three viable options, after nearly a century of only picking option 1 or option 2, people will inevitably pick option 3.

SF are not my first choice, but Labour is dead, the Social Democrats don’t have the size to run a government and I’d sooner trust running the whole country to the Haeley-Ray crime syndicate than I would PBP/Solidarity.

Constantly doing the FF -> FG -> FF cycle is not sustainable, and even if SF fuck up, we have strong enough democratic institutions that the worst case scenario is we turf them out after they fuck up majorly.

  12. Put them and we will see , they have overpromised but all politicians do. They are a change from voting for a late ex teachers son or daughter, and they are worth a shot. We have nothing to lose as it’s civil servants that run the place anyways as it is, at bare minimum it at least shakes up everyone else

  13. The anarchist part of me can’t wait for SF to take over. Also I’ll get to say “told you so” a lot which is nice. My guess is that’s where the fun will end.

  14. I’m voting SF in the hope that they will be a catalyst for greater political involvement and discussion. Re electing FFG hasn’t done my generation any good so why do it again?

  15. All I care about is housing. I’ll vote for the party that I think will fix it. I know Leo and Martin won’t. I’m willing to give SF a chance.

And to any FFG cunt who wants to shite on about the IRA, unless those letters stand for an ‘inexpensive rents act’ I don’t want to know.

  16. If SinnFein had actually been able to form a government without FG/FF it would have been a blessing for FG/FF.

Would have been the worst possible time to be in power and likely would have set them back again for the next election. They wouldn’t get the “give some else a chance vote” and opposition could hammer them about covid measures/PUP and being unable to deliver in promises (because covid took priority)

  17. The fact the Soc Dems are polling so low is incredible to me. Their policies are very similar to what lots of people want yet they don’t get a second look. It’s maddening.

  18. An awful lot of middle class people who think they are the poor are going to be in for a rude awakening when they find out that Sinn Fein see them as the wealthy who need to be hit harder.

  19. You could probably join SF and with zero experience get elected in the next election, people are that out of sorts with the current Circus

  20. Can’t wait to see how shocked everyone is when SF force through a referendum on a United Ireland within their first 4 years. Gona make NI a real shit show for the next decade.
