These countries were given free protection from an immensely powerful ally, and now they’re seeking a seat at the table to shape that ally’s policy as if they were equals.

Militarily, NATO is a hegemonic American protectorate. An American general is Europe’s Supreme Allied Commander.
Eastern NATO Allies are a force multiplier for the US Military and nothing more.
