I hope they get certain communities involved with this ‘childrens capital of culture’, I’m sure they would support it.
This seems suspiciously like an attempt to improve their image without actually spending money to improve anything that would be actually useful or beneficial.
I wonder if it’s run by the same people behind ‘product of the year’?

Nonce capital of the UK. Who are they trying to fool?
When I read this I nearly choked on me drink, probably another scandal about to be covered up
Er…who is in charge? And, er, do they have direct contact with the kids?
Whoever comes up with this must be trolling. But they’re not this is so dangerous to act to nothing happened.
We don’t need comedy anymore. I honestly think the world actually ended in 2012 when we turned on the large hadron collider, this is some sem state of limbo/crazyland we are living in.
I think a child would fare better in Prince Andrew bed than Rotherham
That’s a provocation? A joke? Trolling at an institutional level?
Satire? Apparently not.
>The idea came from a group of young people living in the South Yorkshire town who wanted to improve their home’s reputation.
Aye right. I’m sure local politicians had nothing to do with it at all.
Actually, it sounds like “Children’s Capital of Culture” is something some aspirational Rotherham careerists have just made up and awarded to themselves. They haven’t even gone through the usual PR bollocks lobbying channels to get their PR bollocks title from somebody else.
They knew exactly the kind of comments that would come when you associate Rotherham with children
fucking hell, it’s a complete and utter mockery to the victims.
Who was running the CPS when they decided not to pursue this when it first came out?
I grew up in Rotherham and “thought it was OK” at the time, but the best thing I have ever done is move away (and not to anywhere fancy, I went to Chesterfield!). All my childhood friends that I still speak to say the same, and since I left, all my close family has followed. It’s been ten years since I left, and I have been back a handful of times.
I know this “capital of culture” stuff is aimed to improve it and keep people there, but honestly the place is a no-hope, no future shithole. If you’re still there, get out as soon as you can.
Which culture would that be … the traditional one, or the one that must not be named, that has effectively taken over …..
Even putting aside the very obvious scandal – HOW? There’s literally nothing in Rotherham apart from Magna and a couple of parks.
You mean the place where they just let a small child die of completely preventable sepsis?
Oh, let’s just put plastic flowers on deep wounds and never point fingers at anyone lest we offend people.
I’m sure there is plenty of opportunity for children in Rotherham. Legality of it? Fuck no.
Ironically from the article; “inspire young people to stay at home” – Yeah, Its the only way they are going to be raised reducing the risk of abuse!
HAHAHHAHAHYAYAHHQGQHHQHAHHAHHQHAHHQHABAHHAHAHAH
Oh wait you’re serious?
I grew up in Rotherham, still visit from time to time.
Honestly large portions of the town centre are like a foreign country. Albania/Poland. Rotherham sought diversity and just gave away any sense of Britishness. When you’re walking through an area with posters up warning women to not wear skirts etc as they are in a sharia controlled zone you know you have issues.
One of my friends was beaten and raped in one of said zones. This isn’t some far right EDL propaganda, this actually happened. I saw it. I witnessed and lived it. It was, of course, swept under the rug in the name of PC. This is why toxic groups like the EDL exist.
This has to be a bad joke.
Is this some kind of sick joke? Or are the people behind this genuinely that ignorant?
“The Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal consisted of the organised child sexual abuse that occurred in the town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, Northern England from the late 1980s until the 2010s and the **failure of local authorities to act on reports of the abuse** throughout most of that period.”
I can’t decide if someone really didn’t think this through, given Rotherham’s recent history, or if they’re straight-up trolling the nation.
Just nuke it from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
> Rotherham is to become the world’s first Children’s Capital of Culture in 2025.
I think the kids there have probably had enough of culture..
The name of this project is pretty terrible PR, and surely they could have come up with a less incendiary name like “Rotherham cultural festival” or “Rejuvenating Rotherham” or similar. (Though these would both likely still get a lot of the same snide comments).
That said, the comments here show exactly why this young lady wanted a project like this to happen. Nobody is even watching the video or listening to her point, they’re just immediately jumping to calling anyone involved with this a paedo or using such a terrible scandal as a stick to beat people who were never involved in any was shape or form simply because of where they were born or grew up. It is not her fault that her town was failed by the police and the local council. The fact that people are calling this teenage girl a narcissist or an attention seeker simply because she doesn’t want to be lumped with some kind of original sin because of where she grew up is absurd.
Wait, this is some kind of crass and misguided attempt at humour right? Please tell me this isn’t real.
Seems like the definition of “culture” means something completely different these days.
